Born on May 1, 1911, he was the son of the late James Anthony and Annie Epps Stone and was a member of the Gordon’s Chapel United Methodist Church. His life was dedicated to his family, church, community, and helping others through his work, according to loved ones. Mr. Stone was an unassuming person of firsts, including: attending the first football game in Sanford Stadium, a member of the crew to set the first pole for Jackson Electric Co-op, the first employee for the state poultry research lab and the first employee of the Federal Southeast Poultry Research Center from which he retired. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Mary Matthews Stone; three children and spouses, Gale Stone and Brunelle Brown, Albert L. Stone Jr. and Anne Girvan Stone, Miles Anthony and Teresa Wood Stone; grandchildren and spouses, Leslie Stone and Daniel R. Leuthner, Brian Anthony and Kristen Stone Gordon; great-grandchild, Claire Anne Leuthner; a sister, Jimmie Ree Stone Wardlaw; and two special caregivers and friends, Patricia Hector and Angela Huff. Funeral services were held Sunday, November 5, at the Gordon’s Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Passmore and Luther Fouche officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gordon’s Chapel Perpetual Care Cemetery Trust, 6625 Nowhere Road, Hull, Ga. 30646. Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, was in charge of arrangements.
