Mr. J. A. Williford Dead

   Funeral services for Mr. J. A. Williford, who died Thursday night at the 
home of his son, Col. Q. L. Williford in Madison, will be held at Comer 
Baptist Church Saturday morning, Nov. 28th, at 11:00 o'clock conducted by Rev. 
J. B. Brown.  Interment will be in the Comer cemetery.
   Mr. Williford was ninety-three years of age on Sept. 24th, and had lived in 
Madison County a greater part of his life.  He was born on the old Williford 
place in this county, and even though he lived in Commerce and Athens, he 
always claimed this as his home.  He was at one time Sheriff of the County; 
always a devout Baptist, at one time he and three of his four sons were 
Superintendent of Baptist Sunday Schools.  He was at all times a gentleman in 
word and action.
   Mr. Williford served throughout the War Between the Sates.  He volunteered, 
and entered with Captain John Montgomery's Company from Athens, and laid down 
his gun at the surrender at Appomattox.  He was the last Confederate veteran 
of Madison County.
   Surviving Mr. Williford are:  one son, Col. Q. L. Williford, of Madison; 
one brother, Mr. H. O. Williford, of Commerce; eight grand children; Aubrey 
Williford and Mrs. Nell Williford Reid of Eatonton; Lewis Williford, of 
Seattle, Wash., Shelby Williford, of Hollywood Fla, Mrs. Margaret Williford 
Shaw of Pearson, Mrs. Erdelle Williford Vicers, of Madison; Robert and Billy 
Williford, of Elberton, and four great grandchildren.
