Cobb Reprinted with permission of Rena Cobb Family Histories Page 215 Michael Gormley Brady Michael Gormley Brady was born in County Clare, Ireland of Irish parents in 1816 according to micro page #1763 of the census of 1880, Marion County, Georgia, U.S.A. At the time of the census he had been settled in this country in the Fort Perry and Redbone District for approximately 30 years because his name appears in the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census Records. It shows in 1850 that he was 35 years old, had a wife and two children. The following information was gathered from Marion Probate Court, Superior Court and cemetery records in Marion County. Michael G. Brady m. Rachel G. Freeman after he came to America and the date of their marriage was June 26, 1842. It is believed that she was born in 1820 in Monroe County, Georgia. Both are buried in the Brady Cemetery and show his date of death was Nov. 24, 1889 and hers was Dec. 12, 1880. Their children were: 1. Alexander Samuel Brady (Sandy) b. 05/14/1849 2. Elizabeth Brady (Betsy Ann) (b. about 1853, lived about 45 years, never m. and buried beside parents) 3. Ellen Brady b. 05/14/1858 4. Henry Jackson Brady b. 1860 5. Benjamin Franklin Brady b. 07/01/1863 Other family history tells us Michael G. Brady was on a committee to express views of citizens of Marion County in 1836, served in the Civil War, obtained the rank of First Lieutenant and was mustered from Marion County on Mar. 12, 1864. He was among a group of important citizens who were called by the state assembly to make short speeches on Nov. 10, 1876. During his lifetime he acquired considerable land in Marion County, Georgia where he farmed. His last will and testament indicated that he had a second wife named Martha a/k/a Mahaly. His daughter, Elizabeth, lived on the homeplace with her stepmother. Executors named in the will were respectively Seaborn Hand, son-in-law and Alexander Samuel Brady, eldest son. It is interesting to study Marion Superior Court Deed Records to see how this man from Ireland acquired land at every opportunity. Apparently he was industrious and had money saved to purchase property at public estate sales which were advertised prior to date of sale because records show that he bought 810 acres (4 land lots) in 1859 at the highest bid of $240.50. Other deeds show he paid as much as $1.75 per acre from individuals through private transactions. In his lifetime the records show that he bought at least 1600 acres in Marion County. The records also show after his death in 1889 his estate was sold to heirs who wanted real estate.
