Cobb Reprinted with permission of Rena Cobb Family Histories Pages 220-221 Needham Bacom Bryan & Mary Anna Eliza Perry Needham Bacom Bryan was born in Houston County, Georgia December 20, 1849, the fifth child born to Needham Bryan and the former Eliza Singleton. When Needham was one year old the family moved to Marion County and for the next fifty years he lived in both Marion and Schley Counties and had returned to Marion County for good prior to 1900. Needham, known as Bud, met and m. Mary Ann Eliza Perry around 1874 or 1875. She was born January 23, 1851, the daughter of Confederate Soldier Joseph Perry and the former Mary Ellison. Bud was a prosperous landowner in Marion and Schley Counties. He employed many farm hands, had sharecroppers tend to his land, and bought and sold timber. Bud and Eliza spent their later years in Marion County and lived just east of Tazewell off Highway 137. They were both religious and on May 30, 1930, he sold for just $5 two acres of land in Lot 258, 4th District, to be used for the building of Mt. Nebo Primitive Baptist. This church was built; however, attendance failed, it was torn down, and the land was given back to the family. Bud enjoyed family gatherings, especially if peach ice cream was on the menu, as it was his favorite. Eliza was a very good, yet strict woman, especially in regards to attending church. During church meetings at Mt. Nebo, none of the children wanted to sit by her, because if they misbehaved even the slightest, she would grab their ear and twist it until they calmed down. However, she was well loved by the family, especially the grandchildren, who would gather around her while she taught them how to cook her biscuits on the wood stove. Bud and Eliza had seven children, as follows: I. James Edward Bryan, born October 7, 1876, m. first Leona Garrett, December 25, 1899, second Janie Young, died October 3, 1959 and both are buried in Hickory Springs Church Cemetery, Tift County. II. Mary Eliza Bryan, known as Mollie, born March 17, 1879, m. Julian Custus Mackey December 11, 1899, died April 26, 1967, and both are buried in the Tazewell Cemetery. III. Edna Erle Bryan, born March 27, 1882, m. Will Dixon, died February 1969, and is buried in the Tazewell Cemetery. IV. Alfred Colquitt Bryan, born July 7, 1883, died March 21, 1890 and is buried in the Cartwright Cemetery, Schley County. V. Joseph Needham Bryan, known as Jose, born December 17, 1885, m. Ever Perry December 19, 1909, died May 13, 1968, and both are buried in the Cartwright cemetery. VI. Clinton Bryan, born April 16, 1888, m. Amma (Emma?)Dillard in November of 1914, died in 1966, and both are buried in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Americus. VII. Nettie Eunice Bryant, born October 17, 1891, m. Joseph Emmett Dillard December 24, 1912, died July 12, 1979, and both are buried in Philippi Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Schley County.
