Duncan William Council Wooten Born in Dawson, William C. Wooten, b. 25 May 1880 was the son of William and Anna Stevens Wooten. His mother was born in Putnam in Marion County and after the death of his father on 16 Jan. 1888, Anna moved with her family to Buena Vista in 1889. After graduating from Buena Vista High School, W.C. entered Emory College (now Emory University). Upon completion of two years there, he took a commercial course at the University of Kentuckty, Lexington, Ky. He began his business career as assistant cashier of Buena Vista Loan and Savings Bank in 1901 and by 1918, he had become bank president and largest share holder. During World War I, he served as chairman of the Liberty Bond and War Savings Stamp drive and under his capable leadership, Marion Countians were among the most patriotic investors in the state. Mr. Wooten married Ella Leonard, daughter of Dr. Roderick and Mattie Parker (Mathews) Leonard, of Talbot County. They were the parents of three daughters: Elizabeth L. married William Hawkins and they made their home in Jacksonville, Florida; Eleanor L. married Mr. Beard and moved to Atlanta. They had a son and a daughter. Mary M. married John W. Krafft and they resided in Santa Monica, Ca. One son. Mr. Wooten served as Board of Education President, Chairman of Board of Stewards of Buena Vista United Methodist Church, and the public housing located on Third Avenue, Buena Vista bears a marker designating it as William Wooten Homes.
