McMichael (Atlanta Journal) Hon. Edward H. McMichael, the representative of Marion County in the House of Representatives, is one of the most active and intelligent of the present body of Georgia lawmakers. He is the author of the bill which is known in every city, town, hamlet and school district in Georgia – the McMichael educational bill, which provides for local taxation for school purposes. Mr. McMichael, who is often heard, and always with respect and attention by his fellow legislators on the floor of the house, speaks with that precision and ease which characterizes the trained lawyer, of which profession he is generally supposed to be a member. However, Mr. McMichael is a businessman, and although a student of Blackstone, has never been admitted to the bar. He was born in Schley County in 1870 and reared on a large plantation. He is the son of Dr. J.R. McMichael, a successful planter and physician, who was very proud of a family such as President Roosevelt and other combatants of race suicide would delight in seeing in every home in this country – seven sons and six daughters comprising the family circle. At sixteen years of age Mr. McMichael attended the high school at Buena Vista, Marion County, graduating from that institution. After graduating he made enough money teaching country schools to attend Emory College, and upon leaving this institution he taught school six years – three years in rural schools and three years as principal of the Buena Vista High School, which is now Hoke Smith Institute. In 1892 he was married to Miss Mary Stewart, of Tazewell, Ga., and five children – three boys and two girls bless this union. The first born, Edward H., Jr., is now a page in the House of Representatives, and one of the brightest and most polite of these six little public servants. Mr. McMichael is fond of and believes in the simple life, and his handsome home – said to be the prettiest and coziest in Marion County – is in the country. All of his savings have been invested in the country lands on which he runs some fifteen plows. Mr. McMichael has long since passed the embryonic stage as legislator. He entered the senate in 1902, after which he served his county in the last house, and is again representing Marion County in the house. He is chairman of the house committee on education, and hopes to see two important bills introduced by him – one to put solicitors general on salaries, and one to weed out strife-breeding negro societies – passed at the present session of the legislature. The Marion County Patriot, No. 28 Friday, July 26, 1907 Page Four McMichael For Congress (Columbus Enquirer-Sun) Atlanta, Ga., July 23 – Hon. E.H. McMichael, representative from Marion County, has been telling his friends at the capitol that he proposes to be a candidate for congress in the fourth congressional district to succeed Congressman Adamson. Mr. McMichael has been right in line with the reform movement, and it is reported he intends to make the race on that ground.
