We leave your midst feeling that you are the best people on earth and with best wishes for each and all. Henry S. Munro GOES TO OMAHA With the departure (of) Dr. H.S. Munro and his most excellent family on last Saturday for Omaha, Nebraska, where they will make their future home, our little town had cause to experience a season of genuine regret, for this good family was loved and appreciated by all who knew them, and by cause of a long, true and tried acquaintance since they had become a living, wholesome part of our little family. Their loss to many will perhaps seem ir-repairable and a reconcilliation to their departure appears to now be impossible; yet all is well that aims well, and we can but feel that it was best that they should go. In their new home, Dr. Munro has open to himself a reciprocal territory in which he will put into use and practice the vast amount of great truthes which he has for many years endeavored to search out, relative to the scientific practice of medicine, in order that he might offer suffering humanity something real, true and tangible to take the place of modern day quackery. His book, "Suggestive Therepeautics" and his recent articles in many of the leading Medical publications are receiving the unstinted approval of leading Physicians, Ministers and Educators of the United States. All Ellaville will ever prize the privilege of claiming Dr. Munro and his family. WIGGINS DEAD Our little town was universally saddened on last Monday evening when it became generally known that death had entered one of our homes and plucked therefrom the father of one of our most beloved families. The death of our esteemed friend and citizen, Mr. R.A. Wiggins, which occured Monday evening at seven o'clock came as a thunder shock to all who knew him, as none were prepared to receive such a message owing to the fact that his illness was of so short a duration. On last Saturday morning, Mr. Wiggins was suddenly seized with a severe attack of acute indigestion which, in spite of the aid of skilled physicians and the tender administration of friends and loved ones, his condition rapidly grew worse until the end came. For many previous hours to his death, Mr. Wiggins, although greatly suffering under the weight of pain, realized that the end was near at hand, and the complete resignation he demonstrated towards the will of fate should ever remain a source of sweetest consolation to those who were near and dear to him. Mr. Wiggins was born and raised in Schley county, where he has always lived and held the high esteem and confidence of all our people. He was in no wise a pretentious man, but as a husband, father and a citizen he leaves a reputation not only to be envied but one worthy of emulation by future generations. He had lived upright and honorably, hence death, aside from separating him from his family and friends, offered no fear or misgivings to him. He had walked upright before men and was not afraid to die. At the time of his death, he was tax collector of Schley county, which position he had satisfactorily held for a number of years and was recently elected to succeed himself for a term of two more years. He had been a member of the Methodist Church since early boyhood, always obedient to its ordinances and liberal in his support of its institution. He was in his fiftieth year, and is survived by an immediate family of three children, mainly, Mrs. W.E. Nichols, of Boston, Georgia and Misses Wella and Norene Wiggins of this place. The funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. W.K. Dennis, officiating. More About RICHARD A. WIGGINS: Burial: Ellaville Cemetery, Ellaville, GA iv. Notes for HAMPTON JOEL STEVENS: The Marion County Patriot, December 10, 1886 The Marion County Patriot, No. 50 Friday, December 10, 1886 Page Five Mr. Joel Stevens Mr. Joel Stevens, son of Mr. P. S. Stevens of Putnam, this county died at Dawson, Monday night of typhoid fever, after a lingering illness of several weeks. Mr. Stevens had been traveling on the road as a salesman and was taken sick at Dawson where he remained until his death. He was a young man of excellent character and will have a host of friends in this section to mourn his death. His remains were brought up Tuesday and were buried at Good Hope church Wednesday. The Patriot sympathizes with the bereaved family. From Marion County Patriot dated 12/17/1886 Tribute to Joel Stephens by a friend We would sooner have thought our deceased friend would have been permitted to do for us what we are about to do for him but as the invisible laws of nature have made it different we now, while the record of his generous life twine around our memory and his every unselfish act is a fragrant flower, pay this last sad tribute to his pathetic dust. Joel died where noble youth was being tenderly kissed by the gentle dews of dawning manhood. The spring time of his life had been thrilled with a tremulous desire for all that was noble and elevating. Life's summer promised to make her billowed breast for him the home and throne of peace, happiness and love; while autumn with her arms well filled, promised to lay at his feet the sun-kissed fruits of a useful life, to be enjoyed in Winter's quiet days. But late decreed it different. No boy had a brighter prospect than he. The very soul of nobility, not blinded by fancies of youth, but realizing that life existed in being and not seeming. He possessed an indomitable will, a soul of kindness, an intellect that prepared him for the duties and business of life and made him a pride to relatives and friends. Of the storms and waves that dash against the frail barks of human life, Joel met them all bravely. Through the darkest clouds that ever rolled across his life, Hope ever pointed to the sparkling pinacle of Fame. But when it seemed that only clear waters were before him, his bark struck the hidden rock and his manly form sank beneath the cruel waves and a tragedy was enacted as sad as can be woven in the warp and woof of mystery and death. But this is only another sad picture that has been hung in the picture gallery of the past. There is a precipice in the way of us all. In our course we find many things that please and delight; birds sind, flowers wave along the shore, we would stop but we cannot; time rushes us on; nearer and nearer the brink we draw, we shudder and catch our breath, and it is over. So it was with our loved and loving son, brother and friend, and we are forced to submit to the inevitable, yet the virtues he practiced are immortal. Blow soft ye winds o'er Joel's grave, and lightly fall ye snows, A fitting shroud to cover him, In this his last repose. For he on earth like Him was pure, He's happy now in heaven; Gone to receive the "promises" To Chistian virtue given. Putnam December 10, 1886 vii. VALTER PELHAM STEVENS, b. There ceremony was performed in a beautiful and impressive manner by Rev. R. L. Wiggins. Will Wooten and Jack McMichael, entered the right and left aisles, crossed in front of the altar and took their places, and they were followed in the same manner by the flower girls, little Misses Ella Bess McMichael and Minnie McMichael. Then the bride entered on the arm of her sister, Miss Lois McMichael, and the groom entered on the arm of his best man, Mr. Louis Webb, and the bride and groom met in front of the minister at the altar where the ceremony was performed. After the ceremony the bride and groom made exit by the middle aisle, followed by the groomsman and bride's maid, then the flower girls and the ushers. The bride was exceedingly pretty dressed in a handsome traveling suit. The groom is to be congratulated on winning such a prize for a life partner. Mr. Hamner was depot agent here several years and made many friends during his stay, who rejoice with him in his good fortune. She was born 22 September 1863 in Crevasse Settlement, Darrow, LA, and died 17 April 1954 in New Orleans, LA. Notes for NEWTON CLARK STEVENS: The Marion County Patriot The Marion County Patriot, No. 44 November 8, 1889 Page Three Dr. N.C. Stevens of Darrow, La., is here visiting relatives. He is a brother of Hamp Stevens, of this place and the Messrs. Stevens at Putnam. He left Marion County fifteen years ago. He wanted the news from Marion County and subscribed for the Patriot. Obituary of Dr. N.C. Stevens : From the " Ascension Parish Chief" newspaper of February 1, 1909. " The announcement of the death of Dr. N. C. Stevens, which appeared in the New Orleans papers of the 29th ultimo, carried a pang of sorrow and regret to the hearts of many of the residents of this parish who will recall him as a highly esteemed and respected citizen and physician of the community for a number of years. Dr. Stevens formerly resided in the village of Darrow, where he built up a successful and lucrative practice and acquired a prominent position in public affairs. He served on the school board and at the time of his removal from the state was Chairman of the Democratic parish committee. He was happily married to Miss Anna Landry, daughter of the late Widow Julien Landry, who for may years after the death of her husband and up to the time of her own passing away was a well-known resident of that portion of the sixth ward commonly known as Crevasse Settlement. Having acquired a comfortable competence, Dr. Stevens temporarily abandoned the practice of his profession and moved to Florida, where he purchased land and embarked in fruit culture with a view particularly of establishing an extensive orange grove. Inclement weather and other unfavorable conditions rendered this venture unsuccessful, and the doctor subsequently returned to Louisiana with his family and resumed the practice of Medicine, locating at Ama in the parish of St. Charles, where he continued to reside up to the time of his death. He manifested the same patriotic interest in public affairs in St. Charles that he had previously done in Ascension, and became there, as he was here, a prominent and much respected citizen. He had been in ill health for many months, but insisted upon attending to his professional duties until further exertion was impossible. He was taken to the New Orleans Sanitarium and subjected to an operation in the hopes of prolonging his life, but the relief was only temporary and he passed away on the 28th of January, a few days after his return home from the city. The remains were brought to Donaldsonville on Saturday, January 30, and laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery [ ERROR: actually, Protestant Cemetery], attended by the bereaved widow and children and other sorrowing relatives and friends to whom the sincere sympathies of The Chief are extended. Dr. Stevens was a native of Georgia and his age at death was 62 years." Pension: After his death, his wife Anna Landry applied for and received his Civil War pension. Stevens of Leesburg, Florida married on the 3rd of December 1879 to Annie West in Sumter County, Florida Notes for MARY ANNA LANDRY: She was born September 22, 1863 in "Crevasse Settlement", Darrow, LA during a raid by Doyal's Home Guard on a Federal troop at Darrow. Her father was a member of Doyal's Company but was probably not strong enough to fight with the other Confederates that night. Mary Anna Landry was still a minor when her father's mother, Rosalie Justine (Braud) Landry died on December 20, 1883. Her father had died in 1865 and Anna and her only surviving sibling, Julien Omer Landry, were the heirs to 1/3 of her grandmother's estate. On January 10, 1884 Anna was legally emancipated so that the estate could be settled, and in this way became one of the owners of "the Ascension Parish" property that is still owned by Stevens heirs today. Family stories indicate that he was a difficult child and after his father's death in 1909 could not be controlled by his mother. 10. Wooten One of the saddest deaths which has ever occurred in Buena Vista was that of Mr. Richard C. Wooten which took place rather suddenly last Tuesday morning about 4 o'clock. The immediate cause of his death was the rupture of a blood vessle on the brain. The funeral services were held at the residence of Mrs. Wooten at 8 o'clock Wednesday morning, conducted by Rev. H. C. Brewton. The remains were carried to Dawson for burial Wednesday, and a large number of the friends of the family were at the depot to do honor to the dead and offer whatever assistance was necessary. The ladies were there in large numbers with their offerings of flowers and sympathy. The remains were accompanied to Dawson by the family of the deceased, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Lowe, Mrs. Clifford Lowe, Miss Ida Merritt, Hon. G. P. Munro, R. L. McMichael and the following pall bearers: Judge J. J. Dunham, J. O. Smith, W. L. Guy, L. H. Webb, Clark Duncan and E. M. Miller, of the law firm of Miller, Wynne & Miller of Columbus, Ga., was born in Marion County, Ga., Feb. 14, 1868. He is a son of Judge E. A. Miller of Buena Vista, Ga., who was one of the best-known men in Georgia. Brick S. Miller was reared and received his earlier education in the town of Buena Vista, and graduated from the University of Georgia, Athens, with the degree of Bachelor of Law, in the class of 1888. During his college course he established a fine reputation as an orator and in consequence was chosen one of the champion debaters of the Demosthenean Literary Society. He also delivered a eulogy on the life and character of Dr. Patrick H. Mell, the deceased chancellor of the university, which is classed as the finest tribute ever paid to the memory of that remarkable man. Soon after his graduation Mr. Miller returned to his home in Buena Vista and entered upon the practice of law, giving up his practice a year later in order to travel and thus broaden his views by actual contact with the population of the different sections of the country. In August 1890, he located in Columbus and formed a partnership for the practice of law with his brother, T.T. Miller, to which firm Mr. E.J. Wynne was admitted in September 1893. This law firm now does an extensive practice and its members are regular retained attorneys of some of the most important corporations and largest wholesale houses in Columbus. Mr. Miller was president of the Young Men's Democratic League of Muscogee County in the spring of 1894, and took an active part in securing the registration of the voters of that county. He secured the actual best piece of political strategy ever enacted there. Mr. Miller was selected as a delegate to the convention, which nominated William Yates Atkinson as Governor of Georgia, and took a very active part in the campaign for Atkinson prior to the convention. He was also a delegate to the congressional convention, at Warm Springs, Ga., in August 1894. Mr. Miller has never sought political preferment; he was urged to be a candidate for the legislature in 1894, but sacrificed his own opportunities in favor of a friend. He is unmarried, a member of the Improved Order of Red Men and of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. More About BRICK STONEWALL MILLER: Burial: Buena Vista Cemetery, Buena Vista, GA iv. ANNA HOWARD WOOTEN, b. 12 September 1878, Dawson, Terrell Cty, GA; m. PHILIP LANIER, 26 October 1899, Buena Vista, GA. Marriage Notes for ANNA WOOTEN and PHILIP LANIER: From the Marion County Patriot dated 10/27/1899 Lanier - Wooten That was a happy wedding at the home of Mrs. A. P. Wooten, Thursday afternoon, Oct. 26th, at one o'clock, that united the hearts and lives of Miss Anna Howard Wooten and Mr. Phillip Lanier, of West Point, Ga. As the sweet strains of the Bridal Chorus, rendered by Miss Lucille Lowe, floated across the company, Misses Mina Wooten and Bennie Fontaine, entered the parlor, carrying ribbons that extended from the door to a handsome bank of green on the opposite side of the room. Following Misses Wooten and Fontaine, came Misses Lanier and Alexander, the four forming an archway through which the remainder of the bridal party passed. The handsome groom entered with his brother, Mr. Horace Lanier. The maid of honor, Miss Lizzie May Wooten, preceded the lovely bride, who leaned upon the arm of her brother, Mr. William C. Wooten. Rev. Geo. S. Johnston immpressively pronounced them husband and wife with the ring ceremony. Immediately the company repaired to the dining room where an elaborate breakfast was served by Misses Lillian and Lois McMichael, Minnie Lowe, Annie Tharpe and Willie Bell Watthews. The rays of sunlight were shut out, and the home within, was brilliantly illuminated. In the parlor, smilax crept above the mantel, whose mirrors reflected the cut glass bowls filled with fragrant white flowers. Dainty bamboo, graceful, feathery ferns, and majestic palms were additional ornaments to ths already beautiful apartment. In the sitting room, quantities of Golden Rod and rich, bright-colored autumn leaves with red berries, suggested the season. The dining room was a scene of rare radiance. Here, the color scheme of green and white prevailed. Vine draperies were used in profusion. The snowy beauty of the large round table, upon which the bridal breakfast was served, was rendered peculiarly striking by the antique candelabra. The fair, happy, young bride was becomingly robed in a pale grey costume of cripe de chine, trimmed in real lace. Her bouquet was of Bride's Roses, emblematic of happy love. The bridesmaids wore elegant day toilets, and carried LaFrance roses. Mrs. Lanier is a young women of many admirable traits. Combined with her beauty and intellectuality, she possesses amialbility, a bright sunny disposition and the rare virtue of simplicity. Those who know her best, can most heartily congratulate the fortunate groom upon winning her for his life- long companion. Mr. Lanier is a young man of sterling qualities, wide-spread popularity and prominence in business circles. Rarely is there ever seen such an array of handsome wedding gifts as this couple received. Six large tables were ladened with presents of gold, silver, china and cut glass. Perhaps the most valuable gifts were a set of china of white and gold presented by the bride's family, and a complete chest of silver, a gift of the groom's family. The hosts of friends of Mr. and Mrs. Lanier, all over the state extend their best wishes to them in this new step that they have taken in life's journey. May the future hold for them nought but peace, happiness and prosperity. v. WILLIAM COUNCIL WOOTEN, b. 25 May 1880, Dawson, GA; d. 15 April 1942; m. Our people were shocked beyond measure when the news of her death was received here about 9 o'clock Sunday morning because it was unexpected. The last news of her condition was to the effect that she was getting along finely, but she suddenly grew worse Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock and for some reason a telegram could not be gotten through to her family here announcing the sudden change for the worse. The remains arrived in Buena Vista Sunday morning at half past 11 o'clock and were taken to the residence of Mr. J. W. Roberts, from which place the funeral took place at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. N. R. Sanborn at the Baptist church, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Baptist cemetery, followed by a large concourse of the people of Buena Vista who were deeply moved with reverence for the dead and sympathy for the loved ones whom she left behind. It was intended to have a quiet home wedding at the residence of the bride's uncle, Mr. J. W. Roberts, but at the last moment it was decided to have the ceremony performed in the church, as a large number of school children expressed a desire to witness it. A large crowd gathered in the church at the appointed hour, and as the sweet tones of the wedding march by Mrs. Hollis floated out upon the air the handsome couple entered the church and marched down the center aisle to the altar, where the ceremony was performed by Rev. J. Howard Carpenter, the pastor. There ceremony was delivered in verse, it being a poetical eulogy on love with a final culmination in matrimony. Messrs. H. H. Hammer and Louis Webb acted as ushers.
