Marion County GA Bio Warren Oliver Perry File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Linda Johnson LLJOHNSONC@aol.com http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/marion/bios/perry.txt There has been focus the last week on the children of William PERRY of Meriwether County, GA and his children. Little is known about his last son Warren Oliver PERRY. I have information here on him. 1. Warren Oliver PERRY born 1835 in Meriwether Co, GA married first Missouri Antanet JERNIGAN (20 July 1836 - 7 Nov 1857) in Marion Co, GA , 4 Feb 1852.= She was the daughter of Ptolemy Jernigan (1795-1868) and Sarah L. Jarrell (1801- after 1870 census) of Marion Co. Missouri was the sister of Mary E. JERNIGAN who had married Warren's brother James G. PERRY 4 Feb 1851. The reason Warren and James G. were in Marion Co was because James G. owned land here. 2. The next information on Warren Oliver is the Meriwether 1860 census. It= list: Warren O 32 Julia C. *19 William P. 5 M. A. ** 3 (F) John W. 2 Notice that wife is "Julia C." She is Julia Caroline CLAYTON of Meriwether Co who married Warren 8 Dec 1857 only one month and one day after the death=20= of Missouri Antanet JERNIGAN. This means then that "William P." and "M.A." are children of Missouri Antanet JERNIGAN of Marion Co. This leaves one more question: who is the female "M. A."? I will attempt to prove that later in this message. 3. The next documentation on Warren appears in Columbia County, AR by Dec 1860 where it discussed his guardianship of a child. Either James G. or He= nry P. had purchased land in Columbia Co also by that date. I have not been able to locate any deeds that prove Warren purchased land in AR. 4. As to the time of Warren's death it is unclear, but it is known that he died in the Civil War. There is one-half page dated 16th January 1866 of probate records in Columbia Co, AR which states that the value of Warren O. Perry's estate is less than $300 and no further proceedings were necessary. It list his wife as Julia C. Perry, but does not list children. 5. I have not been able to locate any guardianship papers in Columbia, Meriwether, or Marion Counties. 6. On the 1870 Meriwether Census Julia C. Perry and son John W. are living back there with relatives. However, on the Marion Co, GA census William P. and Nettye Clay** Perry are living with Sarah Jernigan, Missouri Antanet's mother. 7. "William P". is William Ptolemy Perry who, according to his death certificate was born in Meriwether Co, GA. on 29 Nov 1853 to Warren Oliver Perry a= nd Missouri Antenet Jernigan. He died 21 June 1938 in Stephens in Ouachita Co, AR. It states that he had retired from farming in 1904 and had farmed or 38 years. His wife at the time was Martha E. Perry of Stephens. (I have= personally researched Perrys in that county and learned that this was his second wife.) He is buried in Mt. Prospect Cemetery in Ouachita Co, AR. On the 1880 Marion County Census, house number 250, he was married to a "Lula" who was 21. I have not been able to identify any children for "Toll" as he was called. Notice again that his maternal grandfather was "Ptolemy" Jernigan. 8. In referring to the 1860 Meriwether Co, Census notice that the female's initials were "M. A". I have considered several theories from many genealogists. One is that the enumerator thought the female was named after her mother or confused Nettye Clay with her mother's name. Another theory is that the female's full name is "Missouri Antanet Nettye Clay" or that "Nettye" is= a form of the name "Antanet". I may never learn what the reason for writi= ng on the 1860 census "M. A.", Also she was living with William Ptolemy Perry and Sarah Jernigan in 1870. I believe I have proof who she is. 9. Nettye Clay Perry is my great-grandmother. It has been stated by my father that "Toll" was her brother when the family visited him in AR before he died. I have pictures of Nettye Clay and her husband which were made in Stephens, AR. Her death certificate in Hunt Co, TX states the following: Mrs. Nettie White (She had remarried after the death of Samuel Pierce JOHNSON.) Date of birth: 15 October 1856, birthplace: GA, father: Warren Perry. Death date: 24 Nov 1914. (This birthdate would correspond with census dates.= ) 10. Additional information on Nettye Clay Perry: Married Samuel Pierce JOHNSON when she was 14 years old (based on what she old a grandchild and based on the first born it looks probable). This would= have been 1870 or 1871. I have not been able to find any marriage records in Marion, Meriwether, Schley (where Samuel Pierce lived) or any of the othe r area GA counties. Samuel Pierce Johnson was born in Marion Co but his family lived in Schley County part of 20 years. His parents were George Washington Johnson and Elizabeth HART originally of Warren Co, GA. 11. Nettye Clay Perry and Samuel Pierce JOHNSON's children: James William -stayed in Hunt Co, TX Henry- stayed in Hunt Co, TX George Washington-went to Wichita Falls, TX Mattye Lou married Earnest Haney in Hunt Co. 12 The family moved from Marion Co, GA in 1887 and settled in the far northeast part of Hunt Co, TX where Samuel Pierce died in 1890. Additional information: Warren Oliver Perry of Meriwether Co who married Missouri Antanet Jernigan of Marion Co. Their son William Ptolemy, who grew up in Marion Co. married Talula Johnson. The two moved to Ouachita Co, AR. This attachment includes information taken from her death certificate. Warren Oliver PERRY, last son of William Perry, of Meriwether Co, GA married 4 February 1852 Missouri Antanet JERNIGAN of Marion Co, GA. They had two children while living in Meriwether Co: William Ptolemy PERRY, born 29 November 1853 and Nettye Clay PERRY, born 15 October 1856. Missouri Antanet died November 1856. Warren Oliver married a CLAYTON in Meriwether then in December of 1856. By 1862 the family was in Columbia Co, AR. Warren Oliver PERRY died in the Civil War. By 1870, William Ptolemy, aka "Toll" or "Tolly", and Nettye Clay PERRY were living with their grandparents JERNIGANs in Marion Co, GA. By 1880 William Ptolemy Perry was married to "Talula" in Marion Co, GA and Nettye Clay PERRY was married to Samuel Pierce JOHNSON, son of George Washington JOHNSON of Warren Co, GA>Marion Co&Schley Counties, GA. (At this time I have not found marriages for either in Meriwether, Marion, or Schley Co.)
