One of the churches he pastored was Bethel. He was at Bethel when the name was changed to Bethel. Born in SC in 1796 to James R. Phillips and Martha Parnell, he is believed to have died before 1876. He was one of 12 children. He first married Rebecca Phillips (yes, her maiden name was also Phillips) in Morgan County, GA in January 1820. He had three sons that we know of, all of whom touched Marion County - Solomon F. Phillips, Elijah Phillips, and Thomas Jefferson. All three of the boys fought in the Civil War and returned home. Elijah is not buried in Taylor County, but is buried on his son Solomon's property in Marion County (Phillips Graveyard off Hwy 352) Elijah's second wife was Martha Ann Stringfellow, widow of Vincent Horn. The Phillips family in the Bethel Church Cemetery in Taylor County is James William Phillips. James was one of Solomon's many children and thus Elijah's grandson. James and his wife, Helen are both buried here. They had 10 children, all of whose names are listed on the back of their joint headstone. All of the 10 children are now dead and many are buried in the plot around their parents. Children are Herman Grady Phillips (buried in SC), Myrtis Elna Pate (buried at Mt Paran, Box Springs, GA), Vera Beatrice Rustin (Bethel with Rustins), Shelley Almon (Bethel family plot, his wife Clarice is also buried here), Carrie Roberts Theus (Bethel with Lester Roberts family), Ernst James Phillips (Bethel family plot, his wife Sarah is also buried here), Cecil Ruel Phillips (Bethel family plot, his first wife Nan is also buried here), Gladys Susan Montgomery Hortman (Bethel family plot), Blanchard Carey Phillips (buried in SC), and Otis Clifford Phillip! s (buried in FL) ======================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
