Cobb Reprinted with permission of Rena Cobb Family Histories Pages 407-408 Submitted by 1) Mrs. Mary Rogers; 2) Mrs. Penny Rogers Joseph Mauk Rogers Joseph Mauk Rogers was born in Doyle Community 31 Jul. 1907, son of Joseph Seaborn and Elizabeth Mauk Rogers. Joe attended Doyle School through eighth grade. He enrolled in Riverside Military Academy at Gainesville in 1921 and graduated in Jun. 1924. He was awarded the General Excellence Medal upon graduation. He attended the University of Georgia 1924-25 and returned home to manage the family farm due to his father’s serious injuries in an accident. Joe served as a member of the Marion County Board of Education 1928-1935 when he resigned to enter Woodrow Wilson School of Law in Atlanta. He was a member of the Marion County Agriculture Adjustment Committee during the first Federal Crop Reduction Program. He was Chancellor Commander of Marion Lodge, Knights of Pythias in 1929 and became a Steward of Doyle Methodist Church at age 17. He held official positions in the Methodist Church the rest of his life – Columbus District Trustee United Methodist Church, member Administrative Board member of Buena Vista United Methodist Church. Joe and Mary Zachary married in 1932 and moved to Buena Vista in 1935. Joe entered law school in fall of 1935 and finished two years’ course in one year. He graduated valedictorian of his class, took the bar exam and passed the first time. He was admitted to the Georgia State Bar in 1936. In July 1936, he was admitted to practice before the State Supreme Court. He opened his law office for the General Practice of Law in an old building at the corner of Broad Street and Sixth Avenue, over Clyde Dillard’s Grocery. The building was torn down to make room for Tom Perry’s Standard Service Station behind what was Marion Drug Company or Jake’s. Joe was elected judge, Court of Ordinary in January 1940 and held that office until 1948 when he retired to engage in fulltime practice of law. During the war years, he was a member of the Georgia State Guards, Country Ration Board, and Appeals Agent for Selective Service Board which he continued to hold as long as the draft was in effect. City Attorney for twenty-five years, Joe was also City Attorney for Cusseta for several years. He was appointed City Recorder in 1968. Joe was a charter member of Buena Vista Lion’s Club, assisted with scouting program for many years, a member of State Bar of Georgia, Associate Member of Columbus Lawyers’ Club. He continued to work in his law office located in a small brick building across from present day Dime Store in Buena Vista the rest of his life. Joe died due to complications from Parkinson’s disease October 5, 1988 and is buried in the family plot in Buena Vista Cemetery.
