Paulk. Used with permission. Singleton Cemetery Take highway 137 north of Tazewell, GA for 1.2 miles; turn left on Herman Bell Road and go about one half mile. Stop at old Bell home on right for permission and directions. The cemetery is said to lie on Darling’s original homestead, perhaps inherited by Mary and her husband, Robert Singleton. I believe that 2 of the 3 brothers were Darling and Enoch Duke as there is documented evidence that they are the sons of Lewis Duke of Fairfield, SC. I believe my gg grandfather Meredith Duke may have been the 3rd, tho some would say not. Darling's Household in 1840 reflects 2 males that I believe are Darling's brothers Henry Nathan and Lewis Duggan Duke, but when they came to Georgia they were underage and not named as part of the "3 brothers". There were also 3 females in Darling's household in 1840. I've heard rumors thatDarling had a wife prior to Mary Jane Stewart, but, I doubt it. There are similiar rumors that his brother Enoch Duke married Sarah Elizabeth Lancaster Bloodworth in SC, and that she was Native American. I don't believe this to be fact, either. I lean toward the notion that the 3 women in Darling's household were, in fact, his mother, and 2 sisters. More about the sisters later. Back to the people buried in the cemetery - Darling married Mary Jane Stewart December 18, 1846 in Upson County GA and had four children: James M.(possibly Monroe) Duke b abt 1848 Frances L., a daughter, b in 1850 Mary J. born August 16 1852 Edmond L. b August 20, 1855 (I have a photo of his stone and that of his wife Ella Ophelia Wall from the Tazewell cemetery). James married Malella/Matilla Hunter. I dont know where he is buried, though it may be at Tazewell. I don't remember, at the moment I suppose he could be in an unmarked grave at Singleton. Frances m the "Mackey, E." listed on the cemetery census as having served in Company E. 3 GA RBS (actually it is RES). I find him to be Elija Mackey b about 1847 in Upson County, one of the the several children of Mary Jane Stewart's sister Elizabeth and John Mackey. Frances's grave is identified on the Singleton survey as "E. Mackey's first wife". Frances died before 1902, and in 1910, Elijah had a second wife. Elijah and Frances Duke Mackey had 2 sons and 2 daughters, the youngest of which was Hattie. It is her child buried in the grave surveyed as "Mackey, E. (daughter of Hattie)". Mary J. Duke, at the age of 38 married for the first time to Robert Singleton (listed in the cemetery survey). She was his 2nd wife. I have discovered a rather poignant poem said to be inscribed on his headstone; When I can go back to the cemetery, I will do a rubbing to be sure: "The best, the dearest favorite of the shy Must taste that cup for that man is born to die." I find the poem interesting, for Mary died in 1902 and Robert in 1908. Mary Duke Singleton died only 3 months after her mother Mary Jane Stewart Duke. I believe that the daughters of Darling Duke were named for Mary Jane, and possibly for my gg grandmother Frances Elizabeth White Duke, wife of Meredith Duke; And, that the sons were named for Mary Janes's father and brother (I believe her parents were Edmond and Martha Stewart, whose son James is the "Stewart, J. F. Co A 46 GA Inf CSA" in the cemetery survey). I would like some advice on how to get Confederate markers for these graves, assuming I can identify where the graves are. There are stones that I have photos of that I cannot read, so the graves are most likely marked. And my one puzzle left: "Annie Muldrow" wife of Seth W. Muldrow. One researcher says Seth married Annie C. Griggs, a daughter of one of the first settlers in Marion County. If that is true, what in the world is she doing in Darling Duke's family cemetery? Granted Seth and Darling were neighbors for many years. Seth could well be in one of the unmarked graves in the cemetery. Seth and Annie Muldrow's son Andrew Taylor Muldrow (Taylor is a Duke family name, too) also served in the Civil War; in Company F of the 3rd Georgia Reserves. Now here is where I REALLY need help. I think Seth W. Muldrow's wife (listed in various census' as Ann Caroline Muldrow) is Darling Duke's sister. I have no idea that I can prove that, but I will try. The Duke's like many other people named their children for family; and Ann is a Fairfield SC Duke family name. Also, in the 1850 census, there is an R. M. Stewart married to a 42 year old Isabella; I think she may be Darling's sister, too. Isabella is a Duke family name, carried all the way down to my great aunt Isabella Duke Norman. ======================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
