Written: November 9, 1858 Recorded: October 24, 1902 Georgia, Marion County: This indenture made and entered into this the ninth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred fifty eight between Mary Short of the one part and Matthew Melton of the other part of the State and County above mentioned. Witnesseth that for and in consdieration for the sum of one thousand and forty dollars to her in hand paid at and before the sealing and delivering of these presents the receipt of whereof is hereby acknowledged the said Mary Short hath granted bargained sole and conveyed and by these presents grant bargain sell and convey unto the said Matthew Melton his heirs and assigns all that parcel of land known and distinguished by lot (No 212) two hundred and twelve in the fifth Distrist of originally Muscogee now Marion County containing two hundred two and one half acres more or less to have and to hold the said bargained premises together with all its members and appurtenances thereunto belonging to the said Matthew Melton his heirs and assigns and to his and their own proper use benefit and behoof forever in fee simple and the said bargained premises and the right and title thereunto to the said Matthew his heirs and assigns the said Mary Short will warrant and forever defend against the claims of himself and against the claims of all other person or persons whatsoever. In testimony the said Mary Short hath hereunto set her hand and affixed her seal the day and year above written. Additional Comments: Mary Short is Mary McDaniel Short who was the widow of John C. Short. Her son, James E. Short married Matthew Melton's daughter Martha Ann "Mattie", 25 November 1852, Marion Co, GA. Lot 212 was purchased in two potrions on Dec 8th, 1851. The east one half of the lot was purchased by Laban Howell Short and his brother Benjamin Henry Short (sons of John C. and Mary McDaniel Short) and the south west corner (50 acres) by the widow Mary McDaniel Short, purchased from Joseph D. Reynolds for a total of $600.00. I don't know how the other 52 acres came into their hands. The witness Solomon W. Thompson was married to Louisa Jane Melton - daughter of Matthew Melton.
