McMichael 1842-1903 (Mrs. Wm. Rufus Hicks) 6 months before he died. Buena Vista Ga April 22, 1897 Dear Sister, We reached home just as the sun was setting and found all well. I think of you all often and realize the sadness of the old home. But then this thought comes in my mind--we don't sorrow as those who have no hope, our loss is heaven's gain. It won't be many years before we will all be gone, so let us cheer up and take fresh courage, our trials will soon be over. The life boat is coming to gather the jewels home. Our loved ones are passing away one by one. Let us be faithful and try to meet those that have gone where we will part no more. Tell Cousin Kate (Catherine Elizabeth Hicks-single) I think of her constantly and pray the Lord to send the Conforter to her and give her grace to bear her trouble. It is worse on her than anybody. God bless her. We ate dinner with Sue (Dtr. Susan Orleanda) Sunday. She was doing very well. She wanted to go see you all but was afraid. You all have her sympathy. We are having cool weather out here. It makes me think of forty years ago last night. We had a killing frost. It killed the peaches. The reason I remember it so well my old woman(Mary Julia Frances Raines) and I were joined in matrimony forty years ago last night.(21 Apr. 1857) We have had a great many ups and downs in those long years and more downs than ups. It is a long time to live with a woman and not fight, bue we have lived a very pleasant and happy life. And, bless her old soul, I believe I love her better and better. She is a good old woman and I love her. We are plowing corn and cotton, some plows are plowing corn and some cotton. We haven't got any little turkeys yet but the old woman is expecting some this week. It looks like the crows and birds won't let us get a stand of corn.
