Chapman states he was born the 26th day of September 1827 and that he enlisted in military service November of 1862 with the Volunteers Mercer's Brigade and was honorably discharged on the 20th day of April 1865. He states that he is suffering from chronic articular rheumatism, partial paralysis due to an explosion of a shell during the war. This also put out one eye entirely and sees but little with the other eye, rendering him wholly unable to do manual labor. He states further he was not at his company's surrender in North Carolina but was at the hospital by authority of the Surgeon of the Regt. due to the rheumatism. This is dated 8th day of May 1906 , signed by M. D. Chapman before W. B. Wilson Ordinary. S. D. Chapman issues an affidavit supporting his brother's claim for a pension. S. Sheppard of Marion County issues a letter supporting the claim and condition of M. D. Chapman before John C. Butt, Ordinary of Marion County on July 3rd, 1906. M. D. Chapman must have received his pension because the next document is for Applicants Heretofore Allowed Pensions and is dated 1st day of January 1907 sworn before W. B.
