On January 13,1836 the Governor Schley's military aide sent a letter to the Talbot Hussars requesting its captain furnish him with the number of effective men under his command and the nature and condition of his men. The letter was addressed to Capt. C.E. Biddle but since he had resigned his command it was turned over to 1st Lt. Tarpley T.P. Holt for reply. On January 20,1836 Lt. Holt reported the following: C.E. Biddle, Capt, resigned Tarpley T.P. Holt, 1st Lieut Z.D. Holt added by way of postscript that this was the list as "far as I can recollect", adding that there were more effective men who belong to the company but Capt. Biddle had not turned the list over to him. Upon receipt of this information in Milledgeville, the military department entered the following endorsements "Report from Talbot Hussars, 40 officers and men, no captain-destitute of arms- Recd 22nd Jan 1836" Pursuant to further orders the Talbot Hussats proceeded on January 25th to elect a new company commander. Every member of the company was entitled to vote for the officers of the company and a tabulation showed that David B Bush was elected captain by a vote of 15 to 12 over T M Lawrence. This note was certified by C R Wynn, justice of the peace, and Tarpley Holt, 1st Lieutenant.
