This Seems to be the Result at the Hour of Going to Press The election in Marion County passed off quietly and the result has proven an overwhelming defeat of Judge Crawford as was expected. This great defeat does Judge Crawford an injustice abroad if it is taken altogether as a sentiment of our people between the two candidates personally, but the great difference in the vote of the men expresses a deep sentiment against the change in our senatorial nominations. The candidates worked hard the entire day although the weather was extremely hot. We are glad to report the fact that there were no personal encounters during the day, but the day passed off orderly and differences of opinion were expressed good naturedly. If Mr. McMichael is defeated it will be on account of the apathy of the Marion County voters who felt that Marion would be sure for him anyway and did not vote. The total vote of the county was less than the number of names on the list pledging for McMichael. The center of interest in the nomination was for senator. The result hinged on Muscogee and it was so close that neither candidate will have anything to crow over. Mr. McMichael will perhaps win with a majority of 40 or 50. One or two precincts at the hour of going to press were yet to hear from, and Crawford’s friends admit his defeat. The following is the vote of the county: For State Senator, 24th District – E.H. McMichael 448 W.D. Crawford 190 For Representative – B.T. Peacock 300 M.R. Edwards 324 For Clerk – C.W. Lowe 399 S.L. Fleming 225 For Sheriff – N.W. Parker 602 For Tax Receiver – H.S. Wall 432 W.L. Green 209 For Tax Collector – Eugene Drane 359 B.H. Tullis 292 For County Treasurer – W.C. Singleton 614 For County Surveyor – J.H. Melson 643 For Coroner – J.G. Hillman 332 Ike Phelps 154 W.M. Powell 143 The following is the new county executive committee elected: Buena Vista District – S.N. Rushin, L.W. Jordan and W.B. Nutt Brantley District – John Edge, R.C. Rush and J.E. Benson Tazewell District – M.W. Fouche, G.W. Amos and N.L. Halley Fort Perry District – J.F. Wadsworth, Henry Brady and S.R. Montgomery Draneville District – J.L. Williams, Ike Harvey and J.A. Rogers, Willis Wiggins and Enoch Brown The Marion County Patriot Friday, June 13, 1902 Page Four Mr. McMichael’s Race Mr. E.H. McMichael has won one of the most remarkable races for senator from the 24th Senatorial district, composing the counties of Marion, Muscogee and Chattahoochee, that was ever made in any district of the state in the union. He had to fight the politicians of three counties and he did it gracefully, fearlessly and successfully. At no time did he fly off at a tangent and make a scene by getting mad and heaping abuse upon and vilifying his opponent or the friends and coworkers of his opponent. He conducted the campaign upon a high-toned, dignified plane, and those who opposed him will admit this. He had to combat the charge of being tainted with populism and coming into the democratic party as a traitor, but the masses of this county as well as the masses of Muscogee, not counting the purchased and illegal votes placed no confidence in such charges. The democratic party offered to take them back in good faith and we believe Mr. McMichael with the rank and file of the State Populist Party accepted the terms in good faith. We believe Mr. McMichael will make the district a good senator. He has the brain and courage of his convictions to stand up for what he deems to be right and for the best interests of the people of the district. He is ambitious and a growing man. When the matchless Adamson shall have grown tired of his job, or from some unforeseen circumstances he will be out of the congressional arena, then Marion may offer a candidate in the person of Mr. McMichael. As to Judge Crawford, the defeated candidate, it was not because the people loved Caesar less but Rome more. It was a fight for a principal of local self-government and the people won. Unfortunately for Judge Crawford he represented the negative side of that question and lost. We know personally that a large number of Judge Crawford’s friends, a great many of whom were ex-populists, voted against him on account of the principal involved mentioned above. Judge Crawford is capacitated to have made the district a good senator, but was slaughtered in the house of his friends. Mr. McMichael deserves great credit and covered himself with honor in making such a clean race in the face of such great odds, and he is being warmly congratulated. The Marion County Patriot Friday, June 13, 1902 Page Four The Senatorial Race The result of the race for senator from this district was quite a surprise to many. The contest was one of the warmest in the state, and while Judge Crawford and his friends were no doubt disappointed, they have gracefully bowed to the will of the majority and accept the result as becomes good and true democrats. Mr. Michael, the nominee, made a very remarkable race, and the vote he received, although his majority in the district was small is a high compliment to him and shows him to be a strong political campaigner. Mr. McMichael is a young man of ability and an eloquent and convincing speaker. He will be heard from when he takes his seat in the senate. – Columbus Enquirer-Sun File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/marion/newspapers/ehmcmich2381nw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 6.3 Kb
