Belk three miles north of town on the Brantley road was destroyed by fire early Monday morning. The fire was discovered about 2 o’clock a.m. and had such hold on the building that it was with difficulty the family was saved. Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Belk had gone up home to visit his father and family and were there that night. Mr. C.M. Belk was in Columbus. Miss Janie Belk was the first to awake and discover the fire which was then burning through into the room and her screams awoke her brother, who thinking someone was in the house to do harm, rushed to his father’s and sister’s room only to discover that hard and quick work was necessary to save his father who is very old, from burning. By this time the upper part of the building was falling in, and none of the furniture or contents could be saved. – Buena Vista Patriot File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/marion/newspapers/nw1418residenc.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 1.6 Kb
