The town is situated on the pinnacle of a very high point, said by some to be 150 feet higher than Talbotton, with no local causes for malarial disease, which makes it a most healthy and pleasant place of residence. The literal meaning of the words Buena Vista is “beautiful view.” Standing at the courthouse and viewing the surrounding landscapes reminds one forcibly of a view to be had from “Little Round Top” on the battlefields at Gettysburg – in fact it looks more like North Georgia than the southwestern part. The town had a population of 600 in 1880, but since the railroad has been completed it has increased to perhaps 1,000. The people are clever and hospitable, and are refined and intelligent. There are five churches in town – three for the white and two for the colored people. The school facilities are very fine, with always a large attendance, among whom are many from a distance. Marion County was named after General Francis Marion, and laid out from Muscogee and Lee in 1827. The length is about 41 miles and the breadth about 30 miles. Its population is about 10,000, and is nearly equally divided between white and colored. There is a great variety in the soil. In some parts the land is red and stiff, but the most of it is loose, sandy soil and very productive. It rates very high as a agricultural county, and the people are intelligent and well-to-do, making most agreeable citizens. It is one of the finest sections of Georgia, raising a great variety of agricultural and horticultural products, combining all fruits, grain and vegetables of the temperate and semi-tropical zones – corn, wheat, rye, oats, rice, Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes, peanuts, chufas, cotton, peas, sugar cane, apples, pears, peaches, plums and other fruits. The climate is mild and equable, and very healthy, the air being dry and pure and most beneficial for throat and lung diseases. Anyone wishing a pleasant place to live, free from malarial affections, with good people, good society, excellent schools and pure water, could not make a better selection than Buena Vista or Marion County.
