Wilson, at Pineville, was burned Wednesday night. There were but a few of the household goods saved, and no insurance on either the building or the furniture. It is supposed that the fire originated from a defective flue in the stove room. The friends of Captain Wilson sympathize with him in his great loss. The Marion County Patriot, No. 22 June 3, 1887 Page One Pineville Happenings Pineville hardly looks like herself since the burning of Capt. Jas. D. Wilson’s residence, which was one of the largest buildings in town. The origination of the fire is unknown, although it is supposed to have caught from the stove. It was discovered about twelve o’clock on the night of the 25th inst., when it was too late to save the house, as the fire had then gained considerable headway. Among the articles that were burned were all of the dining room and kitchen furniture, nearly all of the clothing of the entire family, all of the furniture except three bedsteads and a few chairs, and all of the parlor furniture, also Capt. Wilson’s watch was valued at $150.00, sixty bed quilts went into the ashes, with many other household articles of more or less value. Relics of gold and silver, etc. of ancestors for generations past could not be recovered for heat of the angry flames extended through the entire building in five minutes after it was discovered. It was a heart rending scene indeed, to stand by and witness the flames and clouds of black smoke that seemed to penetrate the heavens, leaping from the earnings of a life of toil. The loss is estimated at $4,000.00. No insurance. The family of Capt. Wilson offer many thanks to their neighbors and friends for the many deeds of kindness shown them since the above disaster.
