Young Lawyers

Buena Vista has turned out more lawyers than any town in the state according to 
population.  Morgan McMichael and Will Crawford are the latest acquisitions to 
the Buena Vista bar.  They were admitted Wednesday and were catechised in the 
different departments of law by a committee of lawyers composed of Solicitor 
Worrill, Col. Butt, Major Miller, J.S. McCorkle and Henry Persons.  The boys 
stood their examination admirably, and received many compliments on the manner 
in which they stood the test.  After the examination Judge Smith gave the boys 
the following advice: “Young gentlemen, you will have many dishonest violators 
of the law seeking your advice.  All I have to say to you is, make them pay for 
it.”  These young limbs of the law bid fair to make their mark in the world, 
and no one wishes them greater success than we.

His Maiden Speech

Morgan McMichael, who was admitted to the bar last week, made his maiden speech 
before a jury Tuesday, and it was in a grave criminal case in which the neck of 
the defendant, if he had been convicted might have been in jeopardy.  This was 
Morgan’s first effort but one unacquainted with the circumstances would hardly 
have suspected that such was the case, as he deported himself in a manner that 
would have been becoming in one older in the practice of law.  It is a 
compliment to him that he gained the first case in which he was retained as 
attorney.
