Willis was consumed by fire. He lost everything except a barrel of flour, a table and his corn. He thinks the house was set on fire by lightning as there were many evidences to show this. When the severe cloud was coming up Mrs. Willis became frightened thinking a cyclone was coming, and took the children and went to the home of Mr. Jim Simmons not far away. As they were entering the house there came a loud clap of thunder and in a few minutes the house was discovered to be on fire. When Mr. Willis and Mr. Simmons arrived at the burning house they noticed that the northwest corner was partially shattered and that some broken parts of the sewing machine, which was at the back end of the house, were found after the fire near the fireplace. There had been no fire in that room for a week and as it occurred so soon after they left the house during a hard rain it seems to have been caused by lightning. It is fortunate that Mr. Willis and his wife and children had left the building as some of them or all of them might have been killed and consumed in the flames.
