Lost in the Piney Woods

Dr. J.E. Walton got lost in the piney words near Pine Knot spring one day last 
week.  He was at Box Spring and wanted to go to Pine Knot to join a party of 
young people.  He went out with a gentleman on a wagon to within a mile and a 
half of the spring, and reached the house of the gentleman about dark.  As it 
was so near he decided to walk over, so he left his valise with the gentleman, 
put out on foot in the dark with the roads and trails as think as threads in a 
spider web.

He walked for several hours but did not reach the spring.  He had begun to 
debate the question in his mind whether or not the gentleman was not mistaken 
about the distance, when the stern reality dawned upon him that he had taken 
the wrong trail and was lost.  He wandered for a long time and no sign of human 
life could be found, and no sound could be heard save the murmuring winds in 
the pine tops and the lonesome tingle of a distant cowbell.

The situation had become serious.  The lateness of the hour and the weirdness 
of the surroundings had assumed an aspect of anything but inviting.  It seemed 
that to find a settlement was almost impossible, and John set his lungs to work 
raising an alarm.  He was answered by some Negroes at a cabin at McLaughlin’s 
mill, who directed him to the home of Mr. Kilcrease a few miles away where he 
arrived late footsore and hungry.  He found he had been walking a good part of 
the night and was two miles farther from the spring than when he started early 
in the evening.
