The bidding was quite spirited on the part of several gentlemen, but it was finally knocked off by the auctioneer, Mr. B.S. Parker, to Mr. J.E. Lowe at $530. We presume Mr. Lowe will improve the property and turn it into a residence. The main part of the old building will be torn away and all the material that can be used will be put into the school building for colored people. The lot is well located and a valuable one and is worth every cent it brought. In fact many people are of the opinion that Mr. Lowe secured a bargain in its purchase. Many of our people now in middle life first received their inspiration for knowledge at this old schoolhouse and many sacred memories are clustered about it. The Marion County Patriot, No. 25 June 21, 1901 Page Three Ben Smith, colored, has secured the contract for removing and rebuilding the old two story school building for the use of the colored public school. The cost of this work will be $700. Work began Wednesday morning tearing down the old building.
