S.B. Storey, situated about two miles and a half north of town, was consumed by fire Wednesday afternoon between 2 and 3 o’clock. Nothing was saved from the residence except two or three beds. He loses nearly 400 pounds of lard and a large quantity of syrup that was in a pantry near the cook room. It is thought that the fire originated from a chunk falling from the fireplace in Mrs. Storey’s room and setting the carpet on fire. Mrs. Storey was visiting Mrs. Belk at the time. Mr. Storey and the boys were at the barn, one of the young ladies was visiting at Ellaville, the others in school and there was no one about the premises nearer than the barn. Mr. Storey and the boys were inside the barn and did not observe the house on fire until it had gained considerable headway. Messrs. E.M. Tharpe, Jr., C.M. Clements and W.E. Butt were at the Butt place about a half mile this side and when they saw the smoke they ran their horses and were the first at the fire. They did valuable service in helping to save the smokehouse, which contained a large quantity of meat. The loss is heavy on Mr. Storey and his family and their friends sympathize with them deeply. We learn that he had no insurance, and the loss is complete. Fortunately there is a saw mill within two miles and the friends of Mr. Storey will furnish a lot of teams and place the lumber for rebuilding on the ground in short order. A portion of the new building can be gotten ready for occupancy in a short while.
