E.M. Butt, which took place at the home of the latter last Friday night about 10 o’clock. The immediate cause of her death was heart failure superinduced by acute rheumatism. The funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church Sunday morning at 10 o’clock by Rev. C.H. Branch and Rev. W.B. Merritt in a very impressive manner. The opening song “Gathering Home” and the prayer by Mr. Wm. A. McMichael were full of feeling emotion, and there was scarcely a dry eye in the entire congregation. The church was beautifully decorated about the altar, which was but a slight testimonial of the esteem with which the deceased was held in the hearts of the ladies of Buena Vista. Over the door on the left of the pulpit, looking from the front, were the words knit with cedar leaves, “Weep Not,” and on the right the words, “She Liveth Again.” The church was packed with people to pay their last respects to the remains of the good, Christian woman who had fallen asleep in Jesus, many having come from Ellaville, Draneville, Brantley and other places near Buena Vista. The life of Mrs. Butt was a beautiful illustration of a true Christian woman, and to do her Master’s will was a labor of love. She was prominently identified with the Christian societies among the ladies, and she will be mourned and sadly missed by the other members. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the family of the deceased, but especially to Col. Butt, who has been sorely afflicted since Christmas by the serious illness of his little boy, which makes his grief over the death of his wife even harder to bear. The Marion County Patriot, No. 15 April 12, 1889 Page Three Personals Misses Mary Hornady and Kate Merritt of Ellaville, came up Saturday night and spent Sunday to pay their respects to the last remains of their departed friend, Mrs. E.M. Butt. Miss Mary brought a floral offering in the way of a pillow made in bridal roses with the words, “Asleep in Jesus,” in green letters. Miss Helen Rodges (Rodgers?) also sent a lyre made of flowers. The Marion County Patriot, No. 16 April 19, 1889 Page Three Resolutions for Mrs. M.R.
