From the best information we can receive the circumstances of the drowning were as follows: Cullen and one of his companions named Watson, of Taylor county, were in the pond bathing. They were standing on the check dam – a temporary dam used to check the water while a break in the regular dam was being repaired – which was about one or two feet under water. Young Daniel walked off of this dam into deep water and went down, and thought he could swim he became greatly excited and had not the presence of mind to get himself out consequently was drowned. Watson made an effort to save Daniel, but the drowning man clutched him so tight that he could do nothing by himself and was compelled to kick loose to save his own life. Watson says he could have saved Daniel’s life if he had had the assistance of another man. The Marion County Patriot, No. 20 May 20, 1887 Page One Putnam Paragraphs A very sad scene occurred at Daniel’s mill a few miles from here on last Saturday morning. Cullen Daniel, a white boy about 15 years of age, had been sent from his home a few miles above the mill with a bag of corn to be ground at the mill. While at the mill he, with a number of other boys and men decided to go in bathing. It seems young Daniel was just learning how to swim and ventured farther than he could swim and was drowned. The Marion County Patriot, No. 20 May 20, 1887 Page One Draneville Jottings The death of Cullen Daniel was very shocking indeed. I understand that his schoolmates have adopted a set of resolutions concerning his death, these will give the particulars. The Marion County Patriot, No. 21 May 27, 1887 Page Four Resolutions on the Death of Cullen Daniel The following are the resolutions adopted by his schoolmates. They are worthy tributes and reflect the true sentiment of the school. The afflicting hand of God was laid heavily upon us, as schoolmates of Cullen Lee Daniel, by taking his pure spirit from this world into the mysterious beyond, on Saturday, May 14th, 1887 at 11 o’clock a.m. He was 17 years and 11 months old. The occasion is a fitting one to give expression of our high appreciation of his worth and profound grief for the loss we have sustained, therefore be it Resolved, 1st. That we express our deep grief publicly that his friends and relatives may know of the great esteem in which we held him; and that the world may see the grief we experience by his death. Resolved, 2nd. That in his intelligence, his truthfulness and purity of character, his kindness of heart, gentleness of manner, and his ready sympathy with whatever tends to promote peace, good order and virtue. We recognize in him a harmonious blending of those qualities necessary to make a useful and honored member of society. Resolved, 3rd. That while we can offer no other outward tribute to his memory than this expression of our esteem for his noble qualities, and grief at his death, we do mingle our tears with the grief-stricken family, and tender the only consolation of a bereaved heart; their loved one lived a shining example earnestly and faithfully performing the duties of his short lifework. We commend them, for comfort, to Him who does not willing afflict the children of men. Resolved, 4th. That a copy of these resolutions be sent to family of the deceased, also to the Marion County Patriot for publication.
