Memoriam

Lines in loving memory of Mr. M.T. Duke, of Tazewell, Ga., who died August 
31st, 1901, age 26 years.

The deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs. B.T. Duke and was well and favorably 
known as an honest, upright Christian.  He left his home four weeks previous to 
his death on a business trip, and when he had gotten eighteen miles from home 
was taken seriously ill with fever at the kind home of Mr. Turner, who sent a 
message to his parents; but owing to the serious illness of his sister, who was 
also stricken with the fever, his mother couldn’t attend the bedside of her 
dutiful son.  But his father went and did all in his power to relieve him, but 
in spite of all, after four weeks of pain and suffering, death came to his 
relief.  The sad death of Mr. Duke ends the life of a noble, generous heart in 
early manhood.

As it seemed that the pure seed of charity and love were sown in his breast, 
and from the fountain of his heart streamed overflow the benefits of mankind, 
was ever ready to assist the distressed in trouble.  He endeavored to ever 
alleviate the weight of misfortunes.

He rejoiced the promoting welfare of all men; revenge and malice had no place 
of abode in his heart.  He was a member of the Missionary Baptist church and 
died, as he had lived, calm and trusting in his God for refuge.

He was a nephew of Messrs. James Lafayette and Jerry Duke, of Phenix City, Ala.
