Ten days ago his brother was killed, and the family had not recovered from the shock of that death before they were called to bear the sorrow of another. Frank was a son of Mr. S.L. Fleming, he was 22 years of age. He enlisted in the army five years ago and was sent to the Philippine Islands where he served up to a short time ago, when his regiment was ordered to Arkansas. From there he came home, to visit his relatives. He was taken with a severe cold before he reached home, which developed into pneumonia and resulted in his death. The death was doubly sad, because of the age of the deceased and that his brother had only been buried ten days. Mr. Fleming and his family have the profoundest sympathy of all. Fleming near Midway Sunday night about ten o’clock. It will be remembered that his brother Will Ran, preceded him only nine days. It is sad indeed to lose two sons out of one family so suddenly. We can’t see for what reason the good master plucked both his jewels from out of this world, but he has need from them in the upper and better kingdom. We must bow in humble submission to the good Lord’s will and say thy will be done. The funeral was preached at the Baptist church at this place Monday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock. The interment was at the Tazewell cemetery. The bereaved family and relatives have the profound sympathy of the people of this entire community in the hour of their sore affliction. The Marion County Patriot, No. 12 March 18, 1904 Page One Complimentary The following letter received by Mr. S.L. Fleming is self explanatory and a merited tribute to a good boy. Fort Leavenworth, Kan., March 9, ‘04 Mr. S.L. Fleming Buena Vista, Ga. My dear Sir: It was a great shock to receive from Dr. Weaver tonight the news of the death of your son. I had hoped to hear of his early recovery; but the message tells us that our comrade has left us. I have been with the company but a year, but I knew more perhaps of your son than of almost any man in the company; and his loss is a personal one to me. His service in this company for nearly five years was such as to compel the respect of his superiors, and the officers and men of his company join me in sympathy with you in your great loss. Honest and reliable and faithful in the performance of his duty, Frank L. Fleming was such a soldier as all Americans delight to honor. For a father to have given such a man to the service of his country, is to say that he holds his country above all things; the reward must now come in the consciousness that father and son have deserved the respect of all men. There is little that one can say at such a time as this; but it cannot fail to bring satisfaction to know how your son was esteemed by us all. It will be my duty to take a careful inventory of his effects, and to communicate to you the result as well as any other information that may of service to you. Though it is a duty, I shall esteem it an honor to be of service at any time to you. Believe me my dear Sir.
