Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, November 7, 2022 in the chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Wayne Gallops officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. A private interment will be held at Parkhill Cemetery. Cecil was born June 16, 1931 in Marion County, GA to the late Bessie Powell and Alto Hanner, Sr. He served two years in the US Army from 1951-1953. He graduated from Georgia Southwestern, Georgia Teachers College in Statesboro and Auburn University with a Masters in Education. Cecil was a teacher, coach and principal for eight years. In 1965 he began working for the State of Georgia in the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. He was voted Counselor of the Year for the State of Georgia in 1971 and retired in 1988. Cecil was an active member of Morningside Baptist Church. He participated in the “Handy Helpers” and helped prepare breakfast for the brotherhood on Saturday mornings. He adored his family and friends and enjoyed playing golf, fishing and sports. Most of all he loved spending time with his four grandchildren. He was a beloved uncle to his many nieces and nephews. Other than his parents he was preceded in death by seven siblings. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Brenda Byrd Hanner, daughter, Wanda Chappell (Terry), son, Mark Hanner (Misty), grandchildren, Alec Chappell, Zack Chappell, Kayla Hanner and Abby Hanner. The family wishes to acknowledge the loving support they received from the wonderful caregivers at Preferred Care Hospice.
