Harris was helping about the roundlap press keeping the roll or mat of cotton going smoothly into the rollers. By some means his hands were caught under the roller and he was dragged into the press in such a way that nearly all the flesh was rubbed off of both arms, several teeth were knocked out and it was thought that his jaw was broken. He was taken to his father’s home and physicians did all they could to relieve his sufferings, but he died early that night. The surgeons intended to cut his arms off the next morning if he was still living and by the operation his life could be saved. Coachman was a good boy, hard working, honest and attended to his own affairs and let other people’s affairs alone. His remains were buried Saturday afternoon. He leaves a wife and two children. He had many white friends as well as colored who regretted this terrible accident that cost him his life.
