A graveside service was held Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. at New Providence Baptist Church Cemetery in Buena Vista, Georgia with Reverend David Chapman officiating. Mrs. McCorkle was born September 14, 1929 in Cherry Log, Georgia, seventh of the nine children of the late Charles Brownlow and Alice Emma Searcy Hice. She was preceded in death by her sons, Dr. David Benson McCorkle, Jr. in October of 1994 and Kenneth Hice McCorkle in April of 2007. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1947. She married David Benson McCorkle on June 6, 1948. They lived in Oregon, Mississippi and Augusta, Georgia before moving to Rome in 1970. Known to family and friends as George, Mrs. McCorkle was an avid golfer and a long time volunteer at Floyd Medical Center. She was the founding First Lady of Floyd College until 1990. Mrs. McCorkle is survived by her husband of 59 years, David Benson McCorkle, Sr.; two daughters Mery Lynn McCorkle of Los Angeles, California and Sari McCorkle of Atlanta, Georgia; a sister Janie Broome of Blackshear, Georgia; and two brothers Joseph Spurgeon Hice and wife Phyllis of Miami, Florida and Charles Searcy Hice and wife Betty of Helen, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to New Providence Baptist Church, P.O. Box 532, Buena Vista, GA 31803.
