Death of W.E. Matthews

Mr. W.E. Matthews died at his home at Pineville in this county, last Tuesday 
night about 9 o’clock, of congestion after an illness of only a few days.

His remains were buried at the cemetery at Pineville Wednesday afternoon at 4 
o’clock, with appropriate ceremonies by Rev. B.S. Sentell, surrounded by his 
relatives and a large number of friends.  He was the partner of Mr. W.H. Lowe 
in the grocery business in Buena Vista, and to show with what esteem he was 
held by the people of this town, nearly everybody who could get off attended 
the funeral.

Mr. Matthews was in the prime of young manhood, and though it is hard to have 
our dear ones taken off in the evening of their earthly existence, it is harder 
to give them up when they have not yet reached the meridian of a useful life.  
He was a clever, whole-souled, generous man, and numbered his friends by his 
acquaintances.

He leaves a widowed mother and one single sister and several married sisters, 
to mourn his loss.  They have lost a kind and affectionate son and brother, and 
the community one of its most useful citizens.

The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved relatives.

Mr. J.J. Williford and wife, of Americus, attended the funeral of the latter’s 
brother, Mr. W.E. Matthews, Wednesday.
