We are now sustaining one of the saddest occurances ever known to us, our leader has been called from his earthly habitation to a much brighter world than ours, by the God who rules the entire universe. This grand man of Gods, Judge V. Montgomery, has been living here a long time and filled every sphere of life in which he has been placed, as a mason he was highly esteemed, as a church member and Sabbath school leader, he was much loved and honored, and as an adviser he was unequaled. Our community knew more of him as a Sunday school teacher than anything also was our Supt. for a long time. A number of our souls are probably now resting in heaven who took his advice years ago. I know there was shouting and singing by those who have gone before when this good man entered the pearly gates of the celestial city. And at his funeral there was the largest crowd of people ever seen at a funeral at this place, every one eager to pay his tributes to this good man. He had such virtues as command the respect and admiration of people in every sphere of life, he always had a word of cheer for everyone and to know him was only to love him. I know the angels were made to smile when those little children conducted by their present supt. came up at the funeral showed their love for him by adorning his casket with beautiful flowers, such grand honor has never been shown anyone here before this shows how much Uncle Vincent (as he was called by all) was loved by his school. While this is not the only jewel we have lost, Miss Liza Wells died last Friday and Mr. Duten’s babe died Sunday morning and Uncle Vincent died Sunday evening. The bereaved have our sympathy while it is so sad to part from our loved ones, we should be consoled by the thought of meeting them again in a brighter world. Judge V. Montgomery’s death came as a shock but only three days sickness. Supposed to have had a stroke of paralysis, his death is much lamented by all. Josiah The Marion County Patriot, No. 32 August 7, 1903 Page Eight In Memoriam It is not all of life to live nor all of death to die. Everything has its season except death which claims any and all time for its season. As the beautiful Sabbath of May 24th was drawing to a close the all wise Creator saw fit to adorn his already glittering white throne with another precious jewel in the person of Vincent Montgomery who was a faithful servant of God for many years. He was born in Taylor County, January 20th, 1836, united himself to the Methodist church at Portlar in the spring of 1852, he afterwards moved his membership to Reynolds then to Pine Level where it remained until was recorded in heaven. Pine Level is where he did most of his work in the church. Teaching in Sabbath schools, prayer meeting and all the religious worship. Uncle Vincent as he was called by most people who knew him exemplified the “golden rule” in full, always found willing and ready to aid his fellow men. In his young days he was ever anxious to obey any wish of his parents, and as a son was not equaled by any, as a husband and father he was super excellent. Not exaggerating at all we feel safe to say he was pure in all of his nature. Uncle Vincent was our Sunday school superintendent for a long time, and no doubt he has many stars in his crown for the souls he influenced to follow Christ. Every weary one he had a word of cheer, wept with the weeping and laughed with glad and we may also say he honorably filled every position to which he was called. He was the possessor of such noble virtue as to command the respect and admiration of people in every sphere of life. His reports were so mild with love and respect for humanity until the offender could only accept it as good advice from one who loved him, and highly respected God’s creatures. In this way one lived who has lately been taken away, one so much loved, one whose place can never be filled both at church and at home. Although we feel broken hearted and it seems as our whole life is saddened, and Oh! How sad we feel when we realize he can’t meet us again in Sunday school, but we know we can meet him again in that beautiful beyond where death never comes. We know our king is too good to forsake us, therefore be it resolved, 1 That while Uncle Vincent is greatly missed in church, in public life and at home we know heaven is made to shine brighter by his noble presence and we know we have treasures in heaven, one more tender hand to beckon us to come. 2 That as a Sunday school we resolve that we sustain an irreparable loss but the memory of his beautiful Christian life will ever be cherished as a very mask to those who are trying to meet him in that beautiful city where death never comes. 3 That we tender our deepest sympathy to the bereaved ones and pray the allwise sympathize to heal their aching and bleeding hearts. It seems that while Christ clasped him gently by the hand to lead him over the river of death we could hear him whisper as the sting of death grew greater, hold tighter dear Lord till over. Therefore weep not for him as he is bathing in the beautiful light of God. 4 That a copy of this be given to the family of the deceased and also be published in the Butler Herald and Marion County Patriot.
