Nelson Dead Buena Vista and Marion County has been made sad by the death of one of her truest and best citizens, who breathed his last Monday night at about 9 o’clock and his immortal spirit winged its flight to God whom he so delighted to serve while on earth. The physicians exhausted medical material in an effort to save him from mortal death, relatives and kind friends did all in their power to alleviate suffering by gentle and patient nursing and to carry out the will of the physicians, but all to no purpose as the fangs of the disease had fastened themselves too firmly to be eradicated by mortal means. Mr. Nelson had been in bad health for a year or more, and his family physician, Dr. Wesley Jefferson, says the disease which caused his death and which had been gradually growing on him was acute yellow atrophy of the liver, a very uncommon disease but a fatal one. In his death Buena Vista and Marion County has lost one of her best and most useful citizens, a man who held offices of trust and honor and did his duty wherever he found it; the Buena Vista Methodist church loses one of her most consecrated and earnest workers, where he was a good Christian worker as a member of the board of stewards and as a teacher of the Bible class at the Sunday school, in which he delighted so much to serve his Master and whose place will be hard to fill; his family, to whom he was greatly devoted, has lost a kind and affectionate husband and father, but they have the comforting consolation that he died as he had lived, in the faith of his blessed Redeemer. Loving hands brought many flowers and placed them on the casket, but the prettiest thing in this line was a floral offering from his Sunday school class, “Gates Ajar.” It was built upon a wire frame with a base and an arch and this was covered with the rarest flowers. Under the arch was a golden gate left ajar. This floral offering was both pretty and appropriate and showed the esteem in which he was held by his Sunday school class. The funeral services were conducted at the church at 2:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, Rev. R.L. Wiggins preaching the funeral sermon. The church was filled until all the available standing room was occupied, a fitting testimonial as to the love and esteem in which he was held by the people of Buena Vista and surrounding country. After the sermon all that was mortal of this good man was laid to rest in the cemetery and we will see his face no more on earth. Besides the presence of his immediate family he had three brothers here during his last illness and death, Mr. J.P. Nelson, of Oglethorpe, Mr. Will Nelson, of Talbotton and Mr. Wick Nelson, of Eatonton. To the bereaved family we extend our heart-felt sympathy in this time of their great sorrow. The Marion County Patriot, No. 10 March 8, 1901 Page Three Card of Thanks We desire to take this opportunity to express to our friends our sincere thanks for their kindnesses during the last illness of Mr. Nelson and we especially invite the prayers of all Christian people in this our irreparable loss.
