The coroner’s inquest held in the courthouse Monday exonerated the little negro 
boy, Luther Martin, of all blame in the death of Jesse Pugh, colored, who was 
killed on Saturday, near Glenalta, by being shot with a gun in the hands of the 
boy.

Pugh was riding a mule, and meeting the boy, who had been hunting, stopped and 
talked with him.  The gun was accidentally discharged, and the boy thought the 
mule had thrown Pugh when he fell, and catching the mule he brought it back and 
asked Pugh if he was hurt, but receiving no answer went to Pugh and taking hold 
of him found he was dead.  The boy became so frightened at finding himself with 
a dead man that he ran away.
