Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at Oakland Church of God at 11:00 AM with Rev Mike Toomey and Rev. A.R. Curlee officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening at Oakland Church of God from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Active pallbearers will be the Oakland Volunteer Firefighters. Honorary pallbearers will all members of Marion County Volunteer Fire Departments. Mr. Shoemaker was born on April 10, 1943 in Frankfort, IN to the late William Shoemaker and Vera Cheney Shoemaker. He was a member of Oakland Church of God. Mr. Shoemaker was best known as “Chief” of the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department, where he served for many years after retiring from the construction business. He loved spending time with his family and friends and cooking meals for them, especially his grandchildren. Mr. Shoemaker enjoyed sports and watching football with his family. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Zelma Gleason and Helen Moore. Survivors include his loving wife, Janet Hale Shoemaker of Mauk; three sons, Dwayne Hale and his wife, Nenia of Americus, Bobby Shoemaker and his wife, Jessica of Ellaville, and John Shoemaker, Jr. of Mauk; a daughter, Kelly Tunstall and her husband, Kyle of Trenton, FL; eight grandchildren, Tabatha Hale, Carrie Cooper (Zack), Cooper Shoemaker, Amber Dexter, Skylar Shoemaker, Trey Shoemaker, Bridger Shoemaker and Auburn Shoemaker; five great- grandchildren, Zack Cooper, Blake Cooper, Elsa Barber, Garrett Cooper and Townes Barber; a brother, Bill Shoemaker of Box Springs and a sister, Eva Mae Walker of Muncie, IN.
