Louis Curtis Smith, Jr. Born: Mon., Jan. 26, 1948 Died: Wed., Jul. 23, 2014 MSG (Ret.) Louis Curtis Smith, 66, of Buena Vista, Georgia, died Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at his residence. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00PM on Friday, July 25, 2014, at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery with full military honors. Reverend David Chapman will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, July 24, 2014 from 6-8 PM. MSG Smith was born January 26, 1948, to the late Louis C. Smith, Sr. and Kathleena Thigpen Smith. He retired from the United States Army after 30 years of service. During his service he was deployed numerous times, but most notably three tours in Vietnam. MSG Smith was a decorated war veteran having received numerous medals and awards. He was a loving husband and father who always had open arms when it came to children. MSG Smith and his wife raised numerous children aside from their own. He loved taking care of his exotic birds. Survivors include his devoted wife, Mary Lou Smith of Buena Vista, GA; three children, Trina Travers and her husband Benjamin of Waverly Hall, GA, Louis Curtis Smith, III of Columbus, GA and Karla Kathryn Smith and her fiancé Josh Mattson of Buena Vista, GA; a brother, John Smith of Buena Vista, GA; two sisters, Kay Sanders and Kathy Birdsong, both of Phenix City, AL; a niece, Melissa Bruhn; a nephew, Conner Birdsong; a great-nephew, Devin Barton; and several other nieces and nephews.
