Dwight Smith, Sr. SFC (Ret.) Dwight Smith, Sr., 87, of Box Springs, GA passed away on September 4, 2023 at St. Francis Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 1:00 PM at New Life Freewill Baptist Church. Burial with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Josh Gross, Wesley Gross, Allen Smith, Shane Smith, Brian Green and Trey Hearn. SFC Smith was born January 3, 1936 in Gadsden, AL to Thomas A. and Amanda Webb Smith. He was a member of New Life Baptist Church. SFC Smith was retired from the U.S. Army, having served 20 years and achieving numerous awards and medals during the Vietnam War, most notably two Bronze Star medals for Valor, the Air Medal, signifying 100 hours in combat flight missions, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry of which he received two awards. He was a retired minister, having served in several capacities over the years. SFC Smith was also the Chaplain of the Junction City Volunteer Fire Department. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Irene Smith, Minnie Bell Agan and Dorothy Sue Jones and a brother, Arthur Smith. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Mary Hooks Smith; seven children, Sharon Green, Thomas A. Smith (Vicki), Dwight Smith, Jr. (Tina), Michael A. Smith (Stephanie), Jackie A. Smith (Ginger), Dale Gross and Michael Gross (Amanda); three sisters, Pauline Ashworth, Betty Ellis, and Ann Walchoz; 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
