Funeral services were held Sunday, December 2, 2007 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Tante Funeral Home in Buena Vista with Reverend David Chapman and Reverend Pat Taylor officiating. Music was provided by Brenda Humber. Pallbearers were Greg Oliver, Fred Renfroe, Rusty Taylor, Jason Posey, Chris Hudson and Bubba O’Neal. Interment followed in the Tazewell Cemetery in the Tazewell Community. Mr. Thornton was born October 29, 1944 in Covington County, Alabama to Olen Okland and Fannie Mae Meadows Thornton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wilburn Thornton and a sister, Opal Preskitt. He had lived in Buena Vista since 1960 and worked for King’s Custom Builders as a carpenter for 25 years. He was Baptist by faith and a member of Tazewell Baptist Church. He was also an inventor, a woodworker and was always tinkering. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Shirley Ann Cromer Thornton; a son, Bobby Junior Thompson and wife Cathy of Bluffton, South Carolina; a daughter, Barbara A. Church and husband Oscar of Bluffton, South Carolina; and by four sisters, Estelle Wilson and husband James, Doris Usry and husband Barry, all of Americus, Georgia, Evelyn Howell of Plains, Georgia and Mary Register of LaGrange, Georgia. Four grandchildren, Teresa Posey, Brittany Thompson, Leigh Hudson and Derek Church, also survive him, as well as seven great grandchildren, Ryan, Dawson, Dakota, Tori, Keaton, Cameron and Jeremy.
