Walker Assassinated Shot Three Times With a No. 44 Revolver by an Unknown Party Near His Home Our people were shocked by a telephone message Tuesday morning from Mr. O.E. Browning stating that Mr. J.B. Walker had been assassinated the night before in a mysterious manner. Sheriff Parker, the coroner and a posse of gentlemen immediately went to the scene of the murder which is about 14 miles northwest of Buena Vista to hold an inquest and make an investigation of the affair. No evidence could be had, however, that pointed to any clue as to the guilty party, and the jury returned a verdict that Mr. Walker came to his death from gun shots in the hands of a party unknown. Dr. Drane held an autopsy and found three wounds made by number 44 balls, one entered the pit of the stomach and passed entirely through the body and lodging in his clothing, one entered the forehead and passed through the head so that the ball could be felt on the back side and one passed through the back part of his lower neck of shoulder. From the manner in which the balls entered the body Mr. Walker evidently stood face to face with his assailant. From parties who attended the inquest we gathered the following information concerning this tragic and deplorable affair. Mr. Walker had left the home of Mr. Robinson about half past seven or eight o’clock, and it was but a few minutes later when three shots were fired in quick succession and they were heard by some of Mr. Robinson’s children and others living not far away from the scene of the murder. The body was found next morning on the side of the road just across the creek from where Mr. Walker lived and about a mile distance from his home. It was lying with the head downward toward a gully and the feet elevated, and this fact leads those present to believe that he was not killed where the body was found, as blood from the wounds had run downward toward the feet which would have been a physical impossibility with the position of the body as found. It was the prevailing opinion that he was killed at another place not far away and his body carried there for the purpose of diverting suspicion. Tracks were seen going both ways in a ravine leading off from the road, but no clue as to the guilty party could be gained. The remains of Mr. Walker were laid to rest Wednesday morning, and the family have the sympathy of the people in the untimely end of husband and father. Mr. Walker was quite prominent in his section and had accumulated considerable property. We also learn that he carried life insurance to the amount of $5,000.
