Dr William M Pitts Dr William M Pitts is remembered as the Founder of Thomson First Baptist Church. The son of Mr and Mrs N.W. Pitts, he was born in Columbia County Georgia on December 12, 1825. At age Ten the Family Moved to Alabama where he received his early education in the Glenville, Alabama Schools. Within a few years the Family moved back to Georgia and settled in the Thomson area. Religious in nature and strongly inclined towards the Ministry, he early joined Sweetwater Baptist Church; he did not however, become a preacher. At age 21 he entered the Medical College of Augusta and upon graduation he came back to Thomson and Built a residence and local Practice and lived until his death March 24 1910 a greatly beloved and highly respected Physician and community Leader. The Local Newspaper ,The Free Lance, reported in a front page article that “Dr Pitts was actively engaged during the War Between the States and served as assistant Surgeon and rendered valuable aid to those stricken down in battle” Dr Pitts was married twice; His first wife was the former Miss fannie Steed, who died in 1873; his second wife was Mrs S.S. McKinney, who survived him. He was the Father of ten Children, only two of whom were living at the time of his death: Mrs A.D. Asbury of Greenville, SC and Mrs R.E. O’Kelly of Atlanta.
