Steed was born in Columbia County Georgia on June 6, 1829, The Eldest Son of W.P. Steed. From his Father he inherited force of Character, disciplinary talents, strict principles of business and love of independence. At the age of sixteen he entered the preparatory department of Mercer University and Graduated with Honors in the Class of 1851, a class of 12 members. Circumstances led to the profrssion of Teaching. He was principal of Hidge’s Institute, a military school in Greenwood. South Carolins, edited for one year the Temperance Banner, Published at Penfield, and while teaching in a private School in his Native County was elected Chair of Ancient Languages in Mississippi College at Clinton, a position he held until the School closed in 1861 because of the Civil war. In 1860 he married a Daughter of Major Clem Powers of Effingham County. He returned to georgia, was ordained to the Ministry at Thomson First Baptist Church and was elected to the Pastorate of that and three other Churches, SweetWater, Greenwood, and Pine Grove. Here he spent some of the most useful and pleasant years of his life, declining call to more Prestigious Positions because he preferred the freedom and independence of a country life and pastorate the salary of which might be supplemented by Farming or Teaching. In 1872 he was elected to the Chair of Latin at Mercer University . At the close of 1873 he retired from his Pastoral office and devoted himself to the duties of professorship until the end of his Life (From A history of Thomson First Baptist Church).
