Taylor ( who is listed in the membership roll of the UCV camp) it details some of the early days of the small town of Dearing about 8 miles from Thomson. Dearing was a real rough place in those days with the local farmers working hard all week then coming into town on Saturdays to fight, drink and gamble. There was no church because as Mr Taylor says " The Devil wasn't going to give up a place where he had done such good work." As it turns out I discovered from this small book that one of my GG Grandfathers was Murdered right here in Dearing Here are the details from the book The Third man Killed (in Dearing) was Arthur Street . He was Killed near his Home . he was found not far from the Road about 500 yards from his house. It was never known who killed him or at leats never proven. He was a very inoffensive man and no one could understand why he was killed. It couldn't have been robbery as he was in his night clothes. His wife had started to Dearing to take the Express to Augusta, and forgetting something called Arthur to bring it to her he did so and she continued on. He never got back to the house and when she returned he was missing, a search was made and Arthur was found not far from where she left him. Arthur Street was Irish and supposedly the Father of My Great Grandmother Maggie Street. The Hamilton Rangers Muster Roll List him as Discharged by Order of General Lee and another version of the Rolls list him as Killed at home during the War which puts the crime in the years 1863 - 1865 This has my curosity up and I will be looking into it more :o)
