Langford, all of McDuffie county. *************************************** April 8 1872 To the Honorable Ordinary of the Superior Court of said County Please Bear witness to the Petition of James S Shields James L Shields, E.A. Shields, John E Coldwell and J.J. Morris to Incorporate the Boneville Manufacturing Company. For the purpose of Manufacturing Shoes, Flour, Meal and disposing of same by a Dry Goods outlet Dated this Eighth day of April 1872 ************************************* May 22 1872 Military Organization We mentioned some time back that a Cavalry Company had been formed in this county and as soon as the Organization could be effected that application would be made to Gov Smith for Arms and Accouterments. Saturday last the Company met in the Court House and elected the Following Officers. Captain Jas. R Wilson 1st Lt George W. Evans 2nd John T. Stovall 3rd Homer Sturgis 1st Sgt John W. Thomas 2nd D.B Johnson 3rd G.H. Embre 4th R.W. Neal 5th N.L. Evans 1st Cpl W.S. Stovall 2nd John L. Stapler 3rd George Granade Ensign B.M. Evans NOTE: Towns formed their own Volunteer Military Units. In times of peace they were probably more social, marching in Memorial Day Parades, etc. A Calvary Companyies were among the elite. During this same time period, fraternal organizations were very active as well. *************************************** June 12 1872 County Board of Education The New County Board of Education , Consisting of John L Goodrich, E A Shields, Thos M Steed, A J Adkins and George T McCord, appointed by the last Grand Jury of our County in accordance with the Late County Court Bill, Met in the Court House on Last Saturday for Organization. John L Goodrich was elected President. and Thos M Steed County School Commissioner ..... ******************************************* June 12 1872 New Post Office We Notice that the Enterprising Boneville Manufacturing Company have established a Post Office at Boneville and are receiving Daily Mail at that place. Such an arrangement will not only be a great Benefit to the Company , but the surrounding Citizens as well. Now with a New Post Office, Depot and Store House we predict for the Company a monetary Future. ******************************************** July 17 1872 A Shocking Death Luther Lambert , a son of Mr John Lambert of this County was killed by the cars of the Ga RR Near Dearing on Saturday From what we have been told by Dr J.S. Jones attending surgeon for the Coroners Inquest, Young Lambert Came to Dearing Saturday morning and Left that Place about half past Ten ,with the intention of Visiting a Young Lady, Miss Josephine Baker , residing one mile up the Rail Road from that Place. When seen before his death, he was proceeding up the Rail Road on Horseback and from all the Circumstances Together with the position of the body when found it is supposed By Dr Jones and the Jury That his Horse took fright at some object ,Threw him onto the tracks ,and his fall was so serious as to produce a concussion to his brain, rendering him unable to remove himself from that Position before the twelve O Clock down way freight arrived ...... ********************************************* December 16 1872 Died in Thomson on December 11,1872 Mrs Dr T.H. Bevens. We sincerely sympathize with the Family in this sad Bereavement. ********************************************* Married at Hamilton Manor Near Thomson on Thrs Dec 12th By Rev. James S Jones. Dr William McLean of Columbia to Mrs M.A. Hamilton of McDuffie County. Married at the residence of Mrs Rebecca Taylor near Dearing by F Marion Hobbs Esq, Mr Joseph Harrison to Mrs Laura Booker, All of McDuffie County Married at the Residence of the Brides father on December 5th Mr John Gerald of Columbia to Miss Ella Lambert of McDuffie County. *********************************************** March 14 1877 Our Post Office at Dearing is presided over by that charming little Post Mistress Miss Susie Neal, so you see it is no great task to get your mail. There is one thing ,though that, ought to be remedied and that is the Trouble people in this section have getting Stamps. They are not kept at the Office and if you don't, by chance , find them at some of the stores , you have to wait until you find someone going to Thomson or Harlem before you can get them. This is a source of great inconvenience and ought to be remedied. ************************************************* August 1877 An Old Paper While out on a surveying expedition a few days since we chanced to see a land grant belonging to Mrs L.G. Parks, that was made in 1786 when Geo Matthews was Gov of Georgia. This was an old paper having reached the ripe old age of one hundred and two years old. *************************************************** May 1878 Sickness We regret to learn that Mrs Dr William Pitts of our town has been dangerously ill for several days. Her condition at present is Hopeful and Convalescent ************************************************** Obituary Wm T Reese was born February 11, 1855 and Died May 7, 1878. He was taken with Convolutions on Monday which continued until half Past Two Tuesday. When he was released from his suffering..... **************************************************
