Baker Thorpe Cemetery Inscriptions McIntosh County, GA BAKER-THORPE CEMETERY McIntosh County, Georgia Baker Cemetery has been a family cemetery since the interment of Bright Baker. Family members are buried in the Baker-Thorpe Cemetery with the exception of soldiers who died in a nearby skirmish in the War Between the States. The cemetery is near the Harris Neck community in McIntosh County, Georgia, and it appears to have been started during or immediately after "The War Between the States". The cemetery is located about 3? miles east of the present day U.S. Route 17 called "The Stage Road" prior to the 20th century. It is on the north side of the county road that runs from the South Newport Community at U.S. 17 to Harris Neck, ("The Harris Neck Road" was constructed about 1792.) To locate the cemetery from Brunswick, Georgia, proceed north along Interstate 95 through McIntosh County to Exit ?? at U.S. Route 17, leaving the Interstate at that exit, proceed south along U.S. Route 17 for ?? mile to the Harris Neck Road on the left. The South Newport Baptist Church is located on the Southeast corner of the intersection. Turn east onto the Harris Neck Road (County Road ???), the only way you can turn, and go 3 ? miles to a dirt road leading north. Turn left onto the dirt road and proceed north for approximately 300 yards to the cemetery. On the 23rd of April, 1992 this writer went to the cemetery and recorded the names and dates from the more obvious markers that were there. The markers I found were readable except one. There are other graves. There is one with a simple marker and no inscription and some obvious grave sites are unmarked. I have always been told that these unmarked graves are Civil War soldiers. When I compared notes with the sketch provided by Florine Delores Proudfoot German, they do not match as they should. Charles McMullen German, Sr. stated that the sketch was done by a Mr. E.W. Thorpe in Florida and he relied solely on his memory. He was supposedly an elderly man at the time and the sketch may not be entirely accurate, but it is the only known record of who is buried in Baker-Thorpe Cemetery.
