Applicant claims he was captured May 1864 and staid in prison until close of war, witness says he help to bring him to Jackson Hospital near Richmond after being wounded. Served Gordon's Brigade enlisted 3 years 1861 Darien GA Co B 26 Georgia Regiment 5. Remained in company three years - 5-6 months 6. Company Surrendered April 1865 7. Not with company at surrender. Wounded 13 ? 184 captured and a prisoner at Fort Delaware until surrender Filing due to age, infirmity, povery 5 years. owns no property. Reside in McIntosh County Return Poll Tax my son enlisted Cuban army & died there ? 2, 1898 I have no family now but myself & my wife. The rest of my boys and scattterd all about try to do the best they can for themself. I am not receiving any pension. Charles Stebbins 7 Aug 1902 J.A. Townsend. live in McIntosh County Acquainted with applicant about 50 years He resided in McIntosh County all his life He was in Co B 26th Ga Regiment. Enlised Aug 1861 I was a member of same. He performed regular military duty all through the war. Command was surrendered at Appomatox Courthouse VA April 1865. I was present. He was not. He was wounded in May 1865. I took him off the battlefield myself. He was in the hospital. Left his command 2 May 1864. Wounded - leg broken Physician's order. I know because I was there and helped with him until he was to Jackson Hospital near Richmond VA. He works at a Saw mill when able to be out. At times he is unable to work. He is not able to support himself. He was supported in 1898,99,1900 1901 and 1902 by his children and what he made His family is his wife. No property J.S. Townsend 7 Aug 1903 J.H. Britt, Ordinary Physician Affidavit P.C. Clarke and Spalding Kenan Carefully examined Charles Stebbins. He is sixty six years old was wounded in right leg during war which causes him much pain at times and causes him to hafe to hire labor to help him in his duties at Mill. P.S. Lindsey, Commissioner of Pensions Atlanta, Georgia Sir: Referring to your letter of the 1st ultimo, in which you requested information relative to the prisoner-of-war record of Charles Stebbins, Company B 26th Georgia Infantry, CSA and to the endorsement from this office of the 16th ultimo, in which you were advised that nothing had been found of record relative to the subject, I am directed by the Acting Secretary of War to inform you that a reexamination of the records based upon additional data submitted by Mr. Stebbins disclosing the fact that he was captured December 13, 1864, at Savannah, GA and was held as a prisoner of war until June 16, 1865 when released on taking the oath of allegiance at Fort Delaware, Delaware.
