He was a son of Gazaway Bugg LAMAR and Jane Meek CRESSWELL. His grandfather was the Marquis de Lafayette. C. A. L. married Caroline Agnes NICOLL. He was a dealer of slaves and a secessionist. He served as Captain of the Savannah Mounted Rifles until October 1861, when he was elected Colonel of the 25th Georgia Cavalry. [HOUSTON] Captain William BRAILSFORD, son of Daniel Howard BRAILSFORD and Jane Martin Leak SPALDING, was born in McIntosh County, Georgia, in 1826. Twenty-three year old William is listed in the 1850 McIntosh Census as a Planter. He entered service as a 1st Lieutenant in the Savannah Mounted Rifles, 7 Jun 1861, at Sunburry, Georgia. On 1 Sep 1861, William BRAILSFORD succeeded Captain Lamar as commander of the company. The company was then known as CAPTAIN BRAILSFORD’S COMPANY, 1ST GEORGIA CAVALRY BATTALION. His Sutherland’s Bluff Plantation became headquarters for the Lamar Rangers during the early part of the war. From its vantage point on the Sapelo River, they could observe the Yankee vessels in Doboy and Sapelo Sounds. On 20 Jan 1863, the company became Company H, 5th Georgia Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. Captain Brailsford commanded the unit through some of the wars fiercest fighting. On 6 Sep 1864, while on the Tennessee/Virginia Incursion, Captain Brailsford was captured by Federal Forces near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He was transported to and was confined at Johnson’s Island Ohio Union Prison Camp. He was released on 30 May 1865, and returned to Georgia. Union Invaders had desecrated his Sutherland’s Bluff plantation. After the war, he did not return to McIntosh County but rather settled in Bryan County Georgia, at his Retreat Plantation, where he died 29 Jun 1887. He is buried in the family cemetery at Retreat. The Savannah Morning News (2 JUL1887) carried the following in his obituary: ”He was probably the last of his class in Georgia. Money with him was made only to spend, not in his own enjoyment, but in contributing to the enjoyment of others. Ready at all times to serve a friend, even at the risk of his life, he was often identified with affairs of honor in the days when men were called upon by public sentiment to recognize the code duello.” [Thomas D.
