Shad is now plentiful in this market and they are the finest we have ever seen in these parts. The "wheel of fortune" man doubtless thinks that Darien is the "softest" place he has struck yet. It is said that the "phantom party," was a grand affair. We are sorry that we were unable to attend. The City Marshal will go up to Washington City on tomorrow week to see our new President inaugurated. Jack Collins the well-known colored overseer on Champneys Island, died in Darien on Tuesday night of pneumonia. Mr. Adam Strain is going to build a handsome residence on the Ridge. We are glad to know that he will spend his summers here in future. *Mr. Mike Mulcair and Miss Mary E. Walker were married at Doboy on Tuesday night last, by the Rev. Father Shea. The happy couple have our best wishes. The Ridge is the prettiest and healthiest as well as the pleasantest resort that can be found anywhere. It borders on the salts. It should have a thorough drainage system nevertheless. We call attention to the advertisement of Messrs. T. Van Gilder & Son, in this issue. These gentleme mean business and would advise all those having cypress logs for sale to call on them. Ben Nightengale, Sandy Williams, Jerry Jones and Harrington Wilson were arrested on yesterday for refusing to perform street work- The two former paid up and the others will work fifteen days on the streets. Guyton is after others. The machinery for a cypress mill has arrived in Darien and work putting it in place will be commenced at once. The old Hilton mill site at Cat Head creek has been selected and we hope to chronicle in short time the fact that the mill is in operation. Thousands of salt-water trout are now found half-dead flating in the small creeks and rivers in this section. The Board of Health has issued orders prohibiting their sale in Darien. It is said that the freshet is the cause of the salt-water fish dying in large quantities. .... Additional Comments: This page was copied because of Mike Mulcair's marriage to Mary E. Walker.
