Captain Dean was in the city on Thursday apparently in good health but in the evening he complained of a slight headache. Captain Dean was one of the oldest pilots on the southern coast and up to a few years ago was actively engaged as a pilot on our bars. Among the pilots he was known as "the commodore" Capt Dean was 73 years old. He had been living here for a great many years and was highly esteemed and liked by everyone. He was a good citizen and he will be greatly missed by all classes. Capt. Dean leaves two sons and a daughter, Capts. Matthew J. Dean and Frank J. Dean and Mrs. Belle Lucas, and to them we extend our sincere sympathies in their affliction. The funeral took place at half-past three o'clock on yesterday afternoon at the Catholic Church at The Ridge, the Rev. Father Lucke officiating. The remains were interred at the city cemetery. The following gentlemen acted as pallbearers: Mess. Arthur Bailey, E.B. Thompson, G.T. Stein, W.G. Crumley. Additional Comments: Captain James Dean's wife, Mary Anne (Doyle) had died at the Ridge June 28, 1888.
