FOLDS John B. Folds, born about 1772, was born before America even had a first President. George Washington served 1789 - 1797 so America was under the leadership of it's first President when John B. Folds married. It is not known if he ever lived in Columbia County, Georgia, but his first marriage took place there September 26, 1792 when he married Mary Wilkins. It is also believed that John B. Folds married more than once but nothing else was found to prove or disprove this theory. If there was another marriage, the lineage shown here was through his first wife, Mary Wilkins. In re- searching, the Folds name was found to be spelled Foles, Fowles, and Foalds in addition to what appears to be correct, Folds. John B. Folds and Mary Wilkins Folds had two known children though the early census records of the 1820s, 1830s and 1840s show there were more children with no names given. The two known children were: William (Bill) W. Folds, born 1804 in Jasper County, Georgia, married November 29, 1843 in Butts County, Georgia to Frances J. G. Golden (also spelled Golding/Goldin) who was born 1827 in Monroe County, Georgia. Frances was the daughter of Abram Golden, born 1790 - 1800 and his wife, Elizabeth, born 1797 in South Carolina. By 1850 Frances and Bill had settled their family in Heard County, Georgia in a town called Franklin. Neither Bill nor Frances appear on the 1870 census and neither had their family grown more. Three of their minor children were located on the Meriweather County census in the home of James Folds whose relationship to Bill has not been yet established. Priscilla Elizabeth Folds, born October 4, 1843 in Heard County, Georgia, died November 22, 1924 in Worth County, Georgia. She is buried at Union Church Cemetery near Doerun, Georgia. She married John W. Folds, born 1833 - 1834 in Meriweather County, Georgia. Priscilla Elizabeth and John W. Folds raised their family in Meriweather County. President Roosevelt once said "Yesterday afternoon I went up to the top of Pine Mountain. There, stretching out for many miles to the horizon, was a large portion of Meri- weather County. It was good looking country and good to live in." (His 'Little White House' is located there.) John W. Folds lived his entire life in Meriweather County except for the time he served in the Civil War, volun- teering to serve March 4, 1862. He was captured a Prisoner of War at Greensboro, North Carolina on April 26, 1865,Muster Roll of Company F, 41st Regiment, CSA, Meriweather County, Georgia, Howard Infantry. Following the death of John W. Folds, Priscilla Elizabeth Folds moved with some of her children to the Colquitt-Worth County area of Georgia where she died. David D. Folds was born about 1806 in Jasper County, Georgia. He volunteered May 18, 1861 to serve three years in the Civil War and was discharged July 15, 1861 with honor and a disability from war wounds, Muster Roll of Company D, 8th Regiment, CSA, Meriweather County, Georgia, Echols Guards. He died in Meriweather County the latter part of the same year he was discharged from service. The wife of David D. Folds was Nancy Carden whose family name was sometimes spelled Cardin. Nancy was born in 1808 and died December 29, 1891 in Meriweather County, Georgia. She was the daughter of James (Jim) Carden, born 1780 - 1790 in Georgia and his wife, Elizabeth Tiller, born about 1790 in Georgia. James Carden and Elizabeth Tiller were married December 13, 1807 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia and in 1820 and 1830, they were residing in Jasper County, Georgia. The 1830 Jasper County census shows that the family of John B. Folds and Mary Wilkins Folds (parents of David D. Fold) and the family of James (Jim) Carden and Elizabeth Tiller Carden (parents of Nancy Carden), were neighbors which might explain how David D. Folds and Nancy Carden met and courted. David and Nancy lived and raised their family in Meriweather County. This is from the MERIWEATHER COUNTY VINDICATOR (Newspaper), Vol. 20, No. 9, January 29, 1892. "Mrs. Nancy Folds, familiarly known as 'Aunt Nancy' died December 29, 1891; she was born in Jasper County in 1808, moved to this county in 1835, and was married to Capt. David Folds whom it is said was a Captain in the Mexican War; she had been a member of the Baptist Church since August, 1832, and had raised a large family." - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - References: MERIWEATHER COUNTY VINDICATOR, Vol. 20, No. 9, January 29, 1892.
